The state Board of Education is considering a one-year delay in imposing new high school graduation requirements.
School districts have complained that students need more time to prepare for the changes.
The Department of Education in February proposed requiring high school students to take more history, math and science courses for a standard diploma.
Critics say the emphasis on basic subjects could crowd out art, music and vocational electives.
