Governor Allen is trying to come up a plan to implement the new tougher high
school graduation requirements.
He's recommending sex education be optional in state schools.
The proposal may help appease
conservatives who don't want the state Board of Education to delay imposing
tougher high school graduation requirements for one year.
A spokesman for Allen said the governor also will recommend that
localities have the option of hiring reading specialists instead of
counselors in elementary schools.
The board will take up school
standards at its meeting June 11th.
