A Roanoke man barricades himself in his apartment as police try to serve
Timothy McVeigh will wait at least another day for a verdict in the Oklahoma
City bombing trial.

Some tense moments during a standoff earlier at an Apartment complex in
An officer was trying to serve five warrants for the arrest of 33-year-old
Jeffrey Neal Underwood.
But Underwood refused to cooperate with police. He then chained his door
and barricaded himself in his apartment.
Police called in negotiators in an effort to calmly end the situation.
But, Underwood didn't respond.
Five officers then suited up in protective gear, broke down the door and
tossed in a can of tear gas.
Officers found Underwood hiding under some blankets in the bedroom and

Day two of jury deliberations and still no verdict in the trial of Timothy
Jurors arrived at the Denver courtroom early this morning, shielded behind

Earlier today, Jones called the lengthy deliberations a "victory for the

Roanoke City Council members met this morning to discuss pay raises for the
city's appointed officers.
But the members could not come to an agreement on how much of a raise the
city manager, attorney, clerk and real estate assessor should get.

The chamber says these projects must be dealt with now for businesses here
to simply remain competitive.
Governor Allen's recommendations to the state Board of Education are drawing

Educators praised Allen's proposal to delay by one year new high school
But elementary guidance counselors were furious about a recommendation to
make their jobs optional.
Allen sent his recommendations for new accreditation standards late
yesterday to the state Board of Education.
The Board will vote on the proposals
June eleventh. All nine board members are Allen appointees.
The Federal Election Commission has found probable cause that former
Virginia Governor Doug Wilder's 1992
presidential campaign violated federal election law.

But the commission will ``not'' take any action.
The commission's lawyers advised dropping the case because complaints dated
back more than five years and amounts involved were ``relatively small.''
Commission lawyers contended the Wilder campaign received over five-thousand
dollars in excessive donations from individuals and close to four-thousand
dollars in prohibited corporate donations.
The owner of the Franklin County Speedway is in the final stretch of his
financial race with creditors.
As Denise Allen reports, Whitey Taylor is trying some different fundraising
techniques to save his business.

As Hollins College heads into its second century of educating, its doing so
with plans to expand.
Today the school broke ground on its new 14 million dollar library.
The Julian Robertson Family started off the fundraising by donating three
So far the school has raised 13 and a half million dollars towards their 14
million dollar goal.
Officials say the 56-thousand square foot facility will be designed to
incorporate the latest technology.
The Wyndham Robertson Library will be completed in late 1998.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Gilmore is trying to let voters know

Outside of the brick courthouse, stunned people gathered, trying to
