Heavy rain is moving through the area--
Flash flood watches are up, And flash flood warnings for Alleghany and
Roanoke Counties just expired.
The details ahead.

Heavy rain pelted the area just hours ago causing extensive damage to some
buildings in the area.
Rain and mud from a neighboring construction site rushed into the
Williamsburg Manor Apartments just after three-30 this afternoon.
Four apartments in two separate buildings were flooded before the waters

Residents still have to contend with several feet of mud left behind.
In another part of Roanoke County, rain sent creeks out of their banks
forcing officials to close some roads.
This portion of Carvin's Creek Road in Roanoke County was under several feet
of water this afternoon.
The severe storms dumped more than two inches of rain in some areas.
Three accidents during heavy rain storms tied up traffic on interstate 81
In this accident, state police say 25-year-old Johnathon Montvale Goodman of
Roanoke, ran off the left side of the road near the 132 mile marker.
The car then struck the median and flipped over.
Goodman was not seriously injured but his passenger did suffer injuries.
Officials took that person to Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Goodman is being charged with reckless driving.
The name and condition of the passenger is not being released.
A routine police procedure turned into a standoff yesterday at an apartment
complex in Roanoke.
An officer was trying to serve five warrants for the arrest of 33-year-old
Jeffrey Neal Underwood.
But Underwood refused to cooperate with police. He then barricaded himself
in his apartment.
Police called in negotiators in an effort to calmly end the situation.
But, Underwood didn't respond.
Five officers then suited up in protective gear, broke down the door and
tossed in a can of tear gas.
Officers found Underwood hiding under some blankets in the bedroom and

A pay raise for the mayor and other appointed city officials is still up in
Members of the Roanoke City Council met to discuss the issue yesterday but
couldn't come to a decision.
Minutes after calling the special meeting to order, council went into

Citizens will have a chance to give their input when the matter is discussed
again at Monday's City Council meeting.
A Franklin County Speedway owner is gearing up for the last stretch in his
race to raise money for his business.
And, he's using some pretty unusual gimmicks to get what he needs.

19 years since Whitey Taylor has owned the track.
But things could change if Taylor doesn't raise 29-thousand dollars by June
Taylor says he lost money in 1980 when a Willie Nelson concert at the track
He says angry fans set fire to a nearby barn--replacing it and losing money
on the concert put him in the hole.

inadequate and want to see some improvements.

One million dollars has been proposed to pay for the planning of the project
which would widen the road to five lanes.
But it could be years before construction starts.

Vendors are packing up as the 28th annual Festival in the Park draws to a
Roanoke's summer kick-off ended today with a wearable art display.
Vendors from surrounding states traveled to the Star City to outfit festival
goers in clothes suitable for framing.
The weather does have an impact on sales, but organizers say in spite of
today's rain, mother nature cooperated with festival events.
Several of those events were new to the schedule and public response will
bring them back next year.

After a crash on lap 29, Pole sitter Bobby Labonte returned to the race 143
Ernie Irvan had a strong car and he was leading the race with 340 laps left
to go in the 500 lap race.
Dale Jarrett took over the point and he was the leader of the race at the
Then Geoff Bodine gets lose and slides down the track as the cars came
through Dick Trickle hit Bodine's car and then Bobby Hillin came through and
hit Trickles car all three were taken to the garage area ending their day.
Another rough day for Dale Earnhardt. The Intimadator couldn't find the
right hook up and he was running 20-th with 420 laps of the race complete.
Jarrett extended his lead to almost six seconds but Jeff Gordon was reeling
him in. Then after a spin on the track Gordon runs into the back of Jarrett
busting his radiator. He had to take it to the garage area for a new radiator
he returned to the race.
But shortly after the restart Jarrett's ford blew an engine ending his day
after the car had led 256 laps of the race.
Ernie Irvan took the lead but he crashed and that opened the door for Rudd
who held off Mark Martin to win the race.
