More on the plane crash in a moment but first,
some late breaking news to report-- a fire is forcing the evacuation of dozens
of people at Bedford County Memorial Hospital at this hour.
Less than 30-minutes ago, fire crews were dispatched to the hospital for a
blaze that broke out on the third floor.
Nearby fire crews are responding to the call.
So far no word on the cause or injuries at this point.
NEWS-7 has crews at the hospital and will have an update.
Heading over now, close to the New River Valley.
A single-engine Cessna crashed this afternoon killing two people.
The crash occurred around five o'clock today.

A near miss for a 747 plane can be a major mishap-- especially if the
other plane involved is carrying the President of the United States.
The Independent Pilot's Association has just made public an incident from
last week-- a quote-- "near miss" that occurred about 200 miles west of
The pilots of Air Force One say they didn't regard a cargo plane flying in
the opposite direction as a threat to their aircraft, but did change course.
The I-P-A says the planes were within seven seconds of each other.

The rumors of job cuts are now fact at Salem's General Electric plant.
125-salaried positions were eliminated today.
Some employees say they were told there's not enough work.
The company that designs and manufactures control systems for large
industrial machines says "the action is necessary to enhance the
competitiveness of the GE business in Salem."
G-E noted this move won't impact its hourly workforce..this time it's the 30
to- 60- thousand- dollar- a- year jobs.

Those affected will get a week's pay for each year of service with the
Signet Bank is pulling out of Southwest Virginia and putting 25 branches up
Today's announcement is part of a major restructuring effort.
The Richmond-based bank will focus on its core area that includes
Baltimore, Washington D-C, Richmond, and Tidewater.

Julio Del Corso is a real estate tax appraiser there.
He's filed a grievance after months of complaints with no response from the

The tax department says its tested the air and it meets OSHA standards for
nicotine, but its still considering a separately ventilated smokers' room.
Del Corso says he's afraid he'll be fired for speaking out.

trying to breathe new life into the Old City Cemetery. The story when we come

An update on the fire at Bedford County Memorial Hospital tonight.
The fire is under control.
But the evacuations continue.
School buses are apparently being called in to take people away from the
area. The blaze broke out after 9-pm tonight on the second and third floors
of the hospital.

The next police chief in Roanoke County will either be Captain Ray Lavinder
or the Chief of Police in Newark (new-ARK), Delaware.
They've narrowed a 73 person pool down to Lavinder and Chief Bill Hogan in
One of them will be named- -possibly as soon as next week- -to
replace John Cease who left last month for a job in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Lavinder is a native Virginian- He's been on the force 18 years.
Hogan was originally from Huntington, West Virginia.
He says he has family in the Roanoke Valley.
Virginia Tech Athletic Director Dave Braine officially changed TECHS today.
Now he's a Yellow Jacket at Georgia Tech.

The Right To Work Committee is blasting Earley for the 1991 bill in ads
across the state.
A Lynchburg group wants to tell the story of the Hill City through the
graves of its founding fathers and most important citizens who are buried in
the Old City Cemetery.
Now the city is trying to tell their collective story and attract more
tourists to the historic burial ground.
This afternoon, city council members helped turn the first earth for an 80-
thousand dollar visitors center.

More on tonight's breaking news-- a fire is now under control at Bedford
County Memorial Hospital--
The fire has been contained to the third floor.
The blaze broke out about 9:15 tonight.
Evacuations of the entire hospital are underway with the help of fire crews
from throughout Bedford and Campbell Counties.
At least one person has been arrested for interfering with evacuations.
Traffic is backed up in that area because of the fire.
