125 General Electric employees are losing their jobs at the Salem plant.

Good Evening, I'm Jean Jadhon.
For the past few weeks there's been much speculation about job cuts inside
the drive systems plant.
Today those rumors became fact.

Len Besthoff first reported on this cost cutting move at General Electric a
Len how are workers reacting to the news?
Jean they seemed to expect the reduction of 125 salaried positions, but not
the reason why it's taking place.
The employees we spoke with say G-E has told them there's not enough work.

The company that designs and manufactures control systems for large
industrial machines says "the action is necessary to enhance the
competitiveness of the GE business in Salem."
The job cuts will take place over the next four to eight weeks.
Those affected will get a weeks pay for each year of service with the
G-E noted this move won't impact its hourly workforce.
With the adjustment it will have a little more than a thousand salaried
workers and 900 hourly employees.
Jean earlier this year G-E laid off 138 HOURLY workers.
They were brought back to work within a week.

Signet Bank is pulling out of Southwest Virginia and putting 25 branches up
Today's announcement is part of a major restructuring.
The Richmond-based bank will focus on its core area that includes
Baltimore, Washington D-C, Richmond, and Tidewater.
Bank officials say the local branches will remain open until a buyer is

A Danville man's been arrested on three separate charges spanning five
years-- including murder and wounding a 10-year old.
Police arrested 34-year old Frank Edward Clements this morning.
Clements is accused of robbing the American National Bank in Danville five
He's also charged with murdering Tyrone Dawkins in 1993 and shooting 10-year
old Reggie Hutchins two months ago.

Meantime, the Danville Scorpion Motorcycle Club is teaming up with Danville
Police in a softball game next week to raise money for Hutchins' hospital
The penalty phase of Timothy McVeigh's trial begins tomorrow.
Today the judge set some limits- He will allow prosecutors to bring some
victims to the stand- but the emotional testimony will be limited.
So far defense lawyers have not said whether McVeigh will testify.

The next police chief in Roanoke County will either be Captain Ray Lavinder
or the Chief of Police in Newark (new-ARK), Delaware.
Members of a selection committee interviewed six finalists last week out of
a field of 73.
They've narrowed it down to Lavinder and Chief Bill Hogan in Delaware.
One of them will be named- -possibly as soon as next week- -to
replace John Cease who left last month for a job in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Lavinder is a native Virginian- He's been on the force 18 years.
Hogan was originally from Huntington, West Virginia. He says he has family
in the Roanoke Valley.
Virginia Tech Athletic Director Dave Braine officially became a Yellow
Jacket today, accepting a job with Georgia Tech.
Braine announced his decision at a press conference in Atlanta this

Some state buildings are smoke free.
The tax department has very centrally located smoking areas.
State law requires that reasonable efforts be made to separate those areas

The tax department says it's tested the air and it meets OSHA standards for
nicotine, but it's still considering a separately ventilated smoker's room.
That's been discussed now for six years.
Roanoke county emergency workers are checking out reports of a plane crash
on the Roanoke-Montgomery County line.
State police are also responding to the scene on Cove Hollow Road near
Wilson's truck stop.
Officials at the Roanoke airport tower are also checking into the report,
and tell News 7, it may involve a small aircraft.

The Food and Drug Administration wants to crack down on the marketing of
the dietary supplement Ephedrine.
Ephedrine is often touted as a way to get an energy boost or to lose
The F-D-A says the stimulant-- sometimes sold under the name Ma (WANG)
Huang, Ephedra or Epitonin...is responsible for 800 injuries and 17 deaths.
Now the agency wants to limit how much of the drug can be put into any
supplement and to force makers to warn that taking too much of the drug can
The F-D-A says people with heart disease, high blood pressure, or
neurologic disorders should not use ephedrine supplements-- because the
amphetamine-like stimulant can cause heart attacks, stroke, seizures, or death.
