Patients and administrators credit Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital's
emergency response plan for a successful evacuation during a fire last night.
Good Evening, you're watching NEWS-7 Primetime on WEFC.
The cause of last night's blaze is being called accidental.
Police say the fire originated in a recreation room storage cabinet at
Bedford memorial hospital.
A circuit breaker to the stove may have been inadvertantly turned on--
igniting a combustable material that was sitting on the stove.
As Steve Smallshaw reports, the chaos there seems to have calmed down

In many ways, last night's fire provided quite a disaster drill-- something
all hospitals must go through regularly to maintain accreditation.
Roanoke Memorial Hospital's Trauma Director says last night provided a good
example of teamwork between the many agencies involved.

Hospitals have two main goals with their disaster plans-- preparing for
INTERNAL disasters-- those are events inside the hospital where the community
is summoned to help.
But there are also EXTERNAL disasters-- such as the Oklahoma City Bombing--
where the hospital must quickly boost it's resources to help the community.
It could take months to sort out the possible causes into yesterday's fatal
plane crash in Montgomery County.
Today officials from the National Transportation Safety Board started sifting
through the debris of the Cessna 210.
The NTSB gathered clues a quarter of a mile from the crash site, as the civil
air patrol scoured tall grass in a nearby field.

The aircraft was making a practice approach to the Roanoke Regional Airport
when the crash occured near the Roanoke County line.
Officials found all the plane's major components.
The three men on board were all experienced pilots.
The plane belonged to Clifford Wells.
Officials presume he was flying the plane, but an autopsy will conclude who
was at the controls.
All three crash victims are from well known families in the area,
Wells is the former C-E-O of James River Limestone a (Buck-anan) Buchanan
company that was recently sold.
He was an aviator who had been flying for well over four decades.
Tim Sprinkle is the son of Ray Sprinkle a former school board chairman in
Friends say he had finally found his niche as a flight instructor at Hillman
Charles David Smith is the son of Salem City Manager Randy Smith.
Known as David, he was a flight instructor at Hillman aviation as well-- with
plans to someday becoming an airline pilot.
More disaster in the skies, again tonight.
This time, in North Carolina, where two single-engine planes crashed this
evening outside of Asheboro.
The pilots of both planes died-- their names have not been released.
Authorities say there were no passengers on board either plane.
A sheriff's dispatcher in Randolph County says reports that it was a
mid-air collision have not been confirmed.
A nine year old boy who lost his mother in the Oklahoma City bombing
is expected to take the stand in the trial's penalty phase.

Roanoke police are investigating an alleged gang rape of a 12-year old

A twelve year old Northwest Roanoke girl says she was gang-raped yesterday
The girl told police she let three teenage boys into her home, and began
having consensual sex with one of them.
She says several other boys entered the home and and raped her.
The girl said 7 or 8 boys, between the ages of 16 and 18 were involved.
Police say there was evidence of an attack in the bedroom.
So far, they haven't found any of the suspects.
Virginia Tech's "he said, she said" scandal over an alleged gang rape by two
former football players hit the U-S Court of Appeals today.
At this stage, Christy Brzonkala's UNproven rape allegations have boiled
down to two points:
--did Virginia Tech respond inappropriately to her rape allegations and
thereby violate Title Nine protections for women in higher education?
--and did Congress have the power under the "commerce clause" to enact the

A Roanoke City deputy Sheriff has been charged with embezzlement.
Home improvement store LOWE'S filed the embezzlement lawsuit today against
Timothy Wayne Barton.
Barton lives in Salem and used to work part time at the Roanoke Lowe's

will face disciplinary action.
He did say they are conducting an investigation into the matter.

Franklin County's baseball season came to an end tonight as the Eagles
fell to Lake Braddock 6-2 at W.W. Naff Field.

Franklin County took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a
string of errors by the visiting Bruins. A bad throw by the lake Braddock
catcher allows Brian Strong to score.
But the Bruins scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh. Brent Boyer knocks
in the eventual game winner. His single SUPER=34-Lake Braddock/6/Franklin
plates D'Arcy Wills to make it 3-2 Bruins and they advance to the group 3A
state semifinals with a 6-2 victory. Franklin County finishes the season with a
22 and 2 record.
The William Byrd Terriers didn't lose tonight, but they did get a wake up
call of sorts courtesy of Abingdon in the Group Two-A quarterfinals.

The Terriers as is usually the case got great pitching, as starter Brian
Rickerson strikes out Abingdon's Anthony Phillips with the called third strike.
But offense was a little slow to come tonight. In the second inning Parker
Humphries hits into the fielders choice, but it's enough to get Ryan Wheeling
home from third with the eventual game winning run.
Byrd would win it 2-to-nothing as closer Chris Manning, the hard throwing
southpaw strikes out Eric Wilson to end the game.
Byrd wins 2-to-nothing, and not gets ready for a rematch with Chatham Friday
night in the semi-finals.

Former Northside baseball star Kelly Dampeer is the latest local product to
get the call in the Major League baseball Draft.
