Investigators say last night's fire at Bedford Memorial Hospital was an
Preliminary investigations indicate the fire was caused by a hot plate in a
recreation room storage closet.
The hot plate was accidently turned on when a circuit breaker was flipped.
Officials say an automatic sprinkler system and the quick work of fire,
rescue, and hospital personnel kept the situation from becoming much worse.

Closer to home, the N-T-S-B is now searching for the cause of the plane
crash that killed three local men yesterday.
Investigators spent most of the day at the crash site in Montgomery County
examining the debris.

The debris was scattered over a wide area, perhaps a quarter of a mile or
So there was speculation that the plane might have hit some trees or a
power line before it came to rest here, but investigators say they found no
evidence of a collision before the plane hit this hillside.

Investigators were planning to review radar data and radio transmissions
They are expected to continue their work at the crash site tomorrow.
All three crash victims had strong ties to the area.
Clifford E. Wells was the former C-E-O of James River Limestone.
Jim Baber (BAY-burr) says Wells gave him a job at the plant when he was out
of work, and the two have been friends ever since.

22-year old Charles David Smith, known as Dave, is the son of Salem City
Manager Randy Smith.

More recently, he got the flying bug.
The general manager of Hillman Aviation in Roanoke, where Smith was an
instructor, says he had dreams of someday becoming an airline pilot.
Tim Sprinkle of Botetourt County is the son of Ray Sprinkle, the former
chairman of the county's board of education.
Friends say the 25-year old man had found his niche as a flight instructor

The planes went down in pastures near Asheboro which is south of Greensboro
near State route 42.
Authorities say there were no other passengers and the names of
the pilots have not been released.

WDBJ-7 is being sued by Crenshaws' TV and Appliance Stores for a series of
stories that aired last year.
The lawsuit alleges that WDBJ-7 conspired to harm the company's buisness,
and asks for 30 million dollars in damages.
The suit refers to reports WDBJ-7 aired about Crenshaw's purchase of
Holdrens stores in Roanoke and Lynchburg.
We reported that Crenshaws, after initially honoring Holdren's extended
warranties, stopped doing so.
Crenshaws says after the reports, sales decreased significantly.
WDBJ-7 General Manager Bob Lee called the lawsuit "ridiculous", and said
the station would withhold further comment pending consultation with its
In March, WDBJ-7 filed a lawsuit against Crenshaws over nearly 50 thousand
dollars in unpaid bills for advertising purchased months after the station
aired the warranty reports.
The issue of Crenshaw's warranty coverage was investigated by the Virginia
Office Of Consumer Affairs, which referred the matter to the state Attorney
General's Office for review and possible enforcement action.

Embezzlement charges have been filed against Roanoke City deputy Sheriff
Timothy Wayne Barton.
Representatives of LOWE'S Home improvement store filed the charges today.
Barton lives in Salem, and used to be a part time employee at the store.
The sheriff's department had no comment on the matter--
But a spokeman did say they are conducting an internal investigation into
Roanoke City and Clifton Forge have some of the highest unwanted pregnancy
rates in the state.
Tonight a community forum in Salem examined the problem.
Virginia's current unwanted pregnancy rate is 30 percent.
If the state becomes one of the top five states at lowering that number, it
would qualify for 20 million dollars in federal funding.

Franklin County's baseball season came to an end last night in a 6-2
loss. Lake Braddock pitcher Steve McGinn struck out 11 and allowed just three
hits in a dominating performance at W.W. Naff Field.

Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin says he may just sit out the 1997 NFL
