TWA flight 800 was climbing through a dusky sky...and TEN MILES AWAY away from

visible to anyone standing on the beach.
Just above 13-thousand-feet, the center fuel tank... under the passenger cabin
exploded...and a ring of the fuselage peeled away. In seconds, the 747's nose
broke off and... investigators believe the large fully loaded fuel tank in the
right wing ruptured and began leaking fuel.
Without its nose for balance the plane's tail dropped. With all four engines
still running investigators say it's likely the decapitated plane
continued to climb trailing a stream of burning fuel. At a distance of
ten miles it's quite possible THAT looked like an ascending streak of
light or a missile.
The shattered plane finally tipped over and and the badly damaged fuel tank in
the right wing let go.
