Fire officials say a wiring malfunction is to blame for a fire in Northeast
Roanoke today that left a family homeless.
A SHORT in an electrical wire in the dining room sparked the fire..and
HIGHLY combustible wood paneling on the walls caused it to spread quickly.
By the time fire fighters arrived at about three this morning, the house was
engulfed in flames.

Homeowner Chuck Booth says smoke alerted him to the fire.
He woke up his wife and five children, took them to a relative's house
across the street and called 9-1-1.
No one was injured but the family watched their home go up in flames.

Fire Officials say the family was only MINUTES from losing their lives.

Governor Allen has filled two seats on the Virginia Tech board of visitors.
The new members are Roanoke County attorney John Rocovich, Jr., and
Arlington County businesswoman Susan Bari.
Rocovich is president-elect of the Tech alumni association and former
president of the Virginia Tech Foundation.
Bari runs a company that provides counseling to nonprofit organizations.
They succeed Henry Dekker and Sue Ellen Rocovich, whose four-year terms have
Federal Mogul and state officials are trying to determine how many homes may
be affected by a chemical degreaser that's seeped into the ground.
The degreaser has been detected in a well at A-and-T Mobile Home Park, as
well as a nearby spring that feeds into Wilson Creek.
The chemical, known as Trichloroethylene (Try-cloro-eth-lean), or T-C-E, is
used at Federal Mogul to degrease engine bearings.
The chemical apparently seeped into the ground at a private waste water
treatment plant on the site-- that's now closed.
State environmental officials say the company could spend several million
dollars removing the chemical from the groundwater.

The 53rd anniversary of D-Day marks the official beginning of a "sister
city" relationship between Bedford and Vierville-sur-Mer, France.
Though officials from both cities will tell you the sisterhood actually
began when allied troops liberated the village in 1944.
A delegation from France has been visiting the Bedford area all week.

And that's exactly what officials hope the National D-Day Monument will do.
At the site of the monument sand from Omaha Beach was mixed with Bedford
soil in a dedication ceremony to symbolize the bond that soldiers like Roy
Stevens built when Allied troops invaded Normandy.

So far the National D-Day Memorial Foundation has raised 2 and a half
million dollars of the eight million needed to build the memorial.
Officials say they will break ground on the monument later this year.
The Martinsville- Henry County area will soon have another big tool to help
attract more businesses to the region.
Patrick Henry Community College held an indoor groundbreaking today for its
new J- Burness (BURR-niss) Frith Economic Development Center.
The center will provide people with the advanced business training and
education needed so they can go to work for local employers.
The Frith family donated one- point- five- million- dollars to build the

An F-B-I Agent was in Salem today revealing the techniques of a special unit
which investigates violent crimes.
Special Agent Eugene Rugala met with area health workers, lawyers and police
at the Lewis-Gale Medical Center.
Rugala discussed the role of the Profiling Behavioral Assessment Unit in
helping with investigations.
His unit focuses on criminal profiling and understanding the criminal mind.
Rugala says that today more offenders are younger and more crimes are
committed at the work place.
