REPUBLICANS make their own pick for November's election.

Banker Guy Byrd got the nod tonight at the Roanoke City Municipal building.
Byrd says his strong business background makes him an ideal choice for
Commissioner of the Revenue.

Roanoke democrats selected most of their nominees for November's election
in a mass meeting, but one race is up to the voters tomorrow.

Compton Fielder against challenger Sherman Holland, a 16- year veteran of the

An Administration official confirms Air Force General Joseph Ralston is
taking his name out of the running for chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
He came under pressure after admitting he had an affair years ago.
Defense Secretary William Cohen says Ralston fears a fight would hurt his
family, and would be a distraction from serious national security concerns.
A clerk of court in Pittsylvania County has quit her job, saying the new
parental notification law may become the latest form of birth control.
The state law takes effect July first-- requiring teens to get their
parents' permission before an abortion.
Even supporters worry young women will find a way around the law.
Lisa Johnson was clerk of Juvenile Court for 16 years-- but she says she
quit so she wouldn't have to file petitions for teenagers' abortions.
She points out that a woman can go straight to court WITHOUT telling her
parents, to get permission for an abortion.

DEQ handles air, water, and waste discharge permitting for Virginia
In a related report, the Environmental Protection Agency says 21 of
Virginia's worst hazardous waste sites have been cleaned up OR are in the
process of doing so.
Among the so- called "Superfund" sites where cleanup construction is
COMPLETE: the First Piedmont Rock Quarry in Pittsylvania County; and Matthews
Electric Plating in Roanoke County.
Cleanup construction is UNDERWAY at the Dixie Caverns Landfill in Roanoke
County, the Saltville Waste Disposal Ponds in Smythe and Washington Counties,
and the U-S Titanium site in Nelson County.
In Northwest Roanoke, Loudon Avenue residents will soon see some new homes.
The non-profit Blue Ridge Housing Development Corporation will build two low
income houses in the 600 block of Loudon Avenue.
The houses will cost between 55-and-80-thousand dollars.
The corporation also works to educate people about how they can qualify for
Executive Director Alvin Nash says home ownership is an important part of
improving the community.

Construction will begin in two weeks.

Roanoke and historic Gainsboro.
Classmates spent a portion of their school day remembering a seven-year old
Christiansburg girl who was killed when she was thrown from the back of a
Students at Falling Branch Elementary School raised money to plant trees and
bushes in honor of Samantha Rentch who died last month.
The seven year old was thrown from the back of the truck when it crashed

Triple-A's annual vacation cost-survey lists the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa,

Former Virginia Tech women's basketball coach Carol Alfano has been named
assistant women's coach at the University of California.
Alfano replaces Marie Christian who resigned in April. Alfano coached the
Lady Hokies for the past 19 years and compiled a 278 and 262 record with two
NCAA appearances. Alfano was fired after this past season and replaced by
former Tech assistant Bonnie Henrickson.
Four local teams are set to battle for state championships tomorrow in either

Lady Highlanders game begins at 5pm tomorrow.

While his school year is out; Virginia rising senior Curtis Staples is
still has homework to do. He's preparing for the 1997 USA World University
games which tip off in August overseas in Nova Scotia and in Italy.
Staples, who was chosen to play on the World University team by a
committee of NCAA coaches and NBA scouts, is preparing for the European tour at
William Fleming with Joe Gaither's AAU team.
