An overturned logging truck shut down route two-20 in Roanoke County this
The rig was heading northbound when its cargo began to fall off the truck.
The truck overturned in the median, while the load of logs ended up all over
the north and south-bound lanes.
One car didn't stop in time and ran over several logs.
Police quickly opened one of the northbound lanes, but both southbound lanes
remained closed for more than two hours.
Traffic was backed up for nearly three- and a half miles.
The driver of the truck was not hurt but a female passenger sustained minor
injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
Authorities in New Delhi, India are blaming an electrical generator for the
fire that ripped through a packed movie theater today.

At least 60 people were killed including 12 children.
Authorities say more than 200 people were hurt.
Most of the victims suffocated on dense smoke from burning
The fire broke out during a war movie, and many patrons thought smoke
billowing from the screen was a special effect.

A former Radford University student charged with arson and murder made his
first court appearance.
20- year old Michael Harvey is accused of setting fire to a fraternity house
near the Radford campus in February of 1996.
21- year old Christopher Mirch died in that fire.
A judge appointed a public defender to represent Harvey but that may change.
Harvey told the court he was making about 250- dollars a week before his
If he is able to make bond and returns to work-- the judge says Harvey will
have to pay for his own attorney.
The former student was arrested earlier this week while undergoing National

Environmentalists hoped corporate sponsors of the project would give up on
it, if the court orders a delay to re-assess the environmental impact of such
things as snow-making towers, broader roadbeds, and higher speed limits.

A ruling from Judge Jackson Kiser could come as early as next week.
It was a week like no other on Wall Street.

to break a long losing spell.

The president spoke as he met with a seven-member race advisory board he's
named to help him.
Clinton launched the initiative with a speech tonight in San Diego.
Though he says race relations have improved in America, Clinton insists

greatest challenge in the next century.

The problem for Virginia Republicans is that Beyer's auto mechanic

For centuries it was the lifeblood of dozens of Virginia communities, now
some officials would like the James River to be given proper recognition.
Officials across the state are petitioning to have the James designated as
one of ten "American Heritage" rivers.

The James River Batteau Festival got underway tonight and runs through
Sunday along the Lynchburg riverfront.
It's been three years since a gunman's bullet left him paralyzed from the
chest down, but Edward "Bernie" Bernatavicius (ber-nuh-TAH-vitch) considers
himself anything but disabled.
Steve Smallshaw caught up with him in Philadelphia last week, where Bernie
is pursuing his dreams from the confines of a wheelchair.

Three years ago, Lynchburg College's student body president Edward "Bernie"
Bernatavicius was caught in the middle of a driveby shooting.
The bullet severed his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed from the chest
It happened just two weeks before graduation.

It was an unusual standoff today in Washington State.

A naked man brought traffic to a standstill when he fled onto an interstate
highway and climbed onto the top of a truck.
Police say the man -- who was armed with a knife, eventually tossed the
weapon aside and climbed down. He was arrested, and taken to a hospital for a

residential area near the busy highway.

Boones Mill is selling its marked camaro, lights and decals included.
Lt. Lynn Frith says once it's sold the car becomes a show-piece because it
would be illegal for anyone to drive the car with the decals showing.
He says six years in service have taken their toll and it's time to upgrade.
The town is purchasing a 1998 Z-28 for around 20-thousand dollars.
Frith hopes to equip the new vehicle with a video camera.

It rained on their parade, but graduates of Ohio State University didn't
seem to mind.
Today's graduation was about an hour old when a steady rain forced
administrators to cancel the ceremony.
While several thousand spectators ran for cover, many of the graduates made
the most of the situation.
They jumped through puddles and slid on the slippery grass. They picked up
their diplomas later.
