There's been a collision at the intersection of Lost Hollow Drive and
Catawba Valley Drive in Roanoke County.
A car apparently collided with a truck about two hours ago.
Three people were sent to a nearby hospital. There's no word yet on the
extent of their injuries.
Traffic in the area is backed up about two miles on the northbound lane.
As it threatened, the federal government is now withholding anti-pollution
money from Virginia.
The Environmental Protection Agency is keeping more than a million dollars
in funds, until there's more investigation into the reorganization of the state
Department of Environmental Quality.
The D-E-Q laid off 29 managers this spring,
including computer experts involved in filing reports to the E-P-A on industry
New jobs were created, for which they could apply.
A D-E-Q spokesman says the agency is now working to fulfill the E-P-A
requests for information-- dating back to 19-94.
According to published reports Montgomery County officials have charged an
Elliston man with involuntary manslaughter...

for a car accident that left a 7-year old girl dead.
Christopher Fisher was driving a pick-up truck along route 460 when he

These residents hope by uniting they will make their community unfriendly to

a health risk.
They say they've been waiting for months, even years for maintenance workers
to make repairs to buildings and appliances.

she moved in to Chatham Hills Apartments nearly two years ago.
But the plumbing problems became more urgent in December when water started
seeping out from underneath the walls.
She says she's going to withhold her rent until the repairs are made.

They say these steps have been in dangerous disrepair for nearly four

and the stove--only one out of four burners works.

Shakeba Mcmillan says she's going to try to get out of her lease.
While Joyce Gardner says this apartment is affordable and located close to
her two jobs so she's going to fight to get the repairs done.

The evidence is mounting against a Roanoke man accused of murder.
33-year-old Livingston "Bud" Pritchett was arrested last month on capital
murder and robbery charges.

Pritchett is accused of robbing and shooting 57 year old Estel (ES-tull)
Singleton at the Ironto rest stop in April.
According to published reports-- a search warrant filed in Montgomery County
Circuit Court stated that forensic tests matched the bullet found in
Singleton's body-- to the gun authorities recovered in Pritchett's hotel room.
The warrant was filed to get a blood sample from Pritchett.
Authorities say there appeared to be blood on the pistol.
Test will be done to determine if it IS blood and whether or not it's the

You can't sneak onto a space shuttle, but NASA says a Delaware teen did the
next best thing, hacking into their web site.
The teen allegedly got into the site for the Marshall Space Flight Center,
posting messages that called government officials "extremely stupid".
His computer has been confiscated.

The Suffolk County Register of Probate put up the document to mark the

The "price" he's talking about is the assessment for the estate tax--money
that must be paid to the federal government once a farm is handed down from one
generation to the next.
Currently, farmers can take a 600,000 dollar exemption, but for many that's
not enough--they end up selling much of their land in order to pay the tax,
leaving them in some cases unable to continue the family business.

Ned Jeter and other area farmers are hoping to challenge the current
They're leading the "Kill the Death Tax Campaign," a letter-writing effort
that's now nationwide.
The new budget passed by President Clinton and the Republican Congress
already includes an effort to reform the estate tax, but many farmers say
that's not good enough and more needs to be done.
