in which it will look at a five- to- seven mile wide corridor which roughly
follows route 220 from Roanoke to North Carolina.
Factors considered in the location study include effects on neighborhoods,
businesses, historic sites, and the natural environment, along with cost.
The five- million- dollar study should take three years to complete.

single-father families in the United States than at any time in the past 20
years.
That's according to a report by the National Center for Children in Poverty
at Columbia University.

This week it announced an agreement to purchase Jefferson Bancshares, which
has operations throughout the Shenandoah Valley.
A new ice rink like the one they have in Charlottesville should bring a big
boost to Roanoke's downtown development.
The city announced this week that the same developer who built the popular
rink in C-ville plans to do the same here, in a parking lot next to the Norfolk
Southern building.
V-F-P of Botetourt County will build a second plant in Scott County, near
Bristol.
The company, which makes shelters for the telecommunications industry, will
initially employ 40 people at its new facility.
Another record week for the financial markets.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 346 points, closing in on the 78-
hundred mark.
The Nasdaq Composite also hit a new high, ending the week up 18 points.

In August 1994, Ernie Irvan crashed during practice at Michigan and nearly
lost his life.
Well, Today Irvan celebrated in victory lane after taking the checkered
flag winning the Miller 400.

Dale Earnhardt worked his way through traffic over taking the seventh
position and he was running third at one point in the race trying to avoid a
winless streak of 41 races.
The leader on lap 43 was Ted Musgrave with Ricky Craven running in the
second spot.
Then after about 60 laps into the race Terry Labonte runs over some debris
and hits the wall bringing out the caution and sending Labonte to the garage
area.
On the restart Rusty Wallace moved to the front but he was challenged by
Bobby Labonte and Mark Martin.
But when the cars crossed the line at the half way mark Bill Elliott was
leading the race just ahead of Earnhardt.
Jeff Gordon started 22-nd but he passed his teammate Ricky Craven to move

diving catch to close out the top of the first.
In the bottom of the first with Elvis Pena at bat, Neubart steals second
base the throw goes into center field and neubart advances to third in scoring
position.

a shot to the left field wall for a single scoring two runs the Avalanche led 2
to nothing but Winston-Salem goes on to win it 6 to 2.

Masters champ Tiger Woods never really challenged for the lead today at the
U-S Open. Woods finished his round with a 2 over par 72 leaving him at 6 over
par for the tournament.
Defending champ Steve Jones finished at 79 for a 15 over par total.
Ernie Els birdied the 12-th hole to take the lead at 5 under par.
Three golfers including Tom Lehman were one shot back at 4 under par.

The state of Tennessee is getting its first major league sports team.
The N-F-L Tennessee Oilers formally opened a ticket office in Memphis where
they will play the upcoming football season.
The Players have cleaned out their lockers in Houston.
The franchise is the Volunteer State's first major sports team although the
state did have brief stings in the World Football League and the United States
Football League.
