CIGARETTE COMPANIES AND GOVERNMENT LAWYERS REPRESENTING 40 STATES HAVE FINALLY
REACHED AN AGREEMENT TO GIVE THE GOVERNMENT SIGNIFICANTLY MORE POWER TO
REGULATE CIGARETTES.
(SOT, MOORE AGAIN)
THE DEAL ENABLES THE GOVERNMENT TO ESSENTIALLY CONTROL NICOTINE. IT SHARPLY
RESTRICTS CIGARETTE ADS AND IT REQUIRES CIGARETTE MAKERS TO PRINT OMINOUS
WARNINGS ON PACKS THAT SPELL OUT THE DANGER CONNECTED WITH SMOKING. THEN
THERE'S THE MONEY INVOLVED, ANT IT IS LARGE. CIGARETTE COMPANIES ARE
REQUIRED TO PAY 360-BILLION DOLLARS OVER THE NEXT 25 YEARS, 10-BILLION OF
THAT RIGHT AWAY.
ANOTHER LARGE CHUNK OF THE MONEY WILL PAY FOR HEALTH COVERAGE FOR UNINSURED
CHILDREN AND PEOPLE WHO WANT TO QUIT SMOKING WILL GET FREE HELP TO KICK THE
HABIT.
WHAT DO THE TOBACCO COMPANIES GET: THE AGREEMENT SETTLES DOZENS OF LAWSUITS,
INCLUDING 40 THAT THE STATES INVOLVED IN THE TALKS HAVE FILED AGAINST TOBACCO
COMPANIES TO RECOVER MEDICAID COSTS CONNECTED WITH HEALTH PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED
WITH SMOKING. THE AGREEMENT ALSO SETTLES NEARLY 20 OTHER CLASS ACTION SUITS
AGAINST CIGARETTE MAKERS AND PROHIBITS ANYONE FROM SUING THE COMPANIES FOR
