M-David Hooper had been on medical leave in recent months fighting cancer.
He came to western Virginia in the summer of 1967.
Hooper was the chief of police in Pottstown, Pennsylvania when he was
selected to lead the force here in Roanoke.

Hooper's tenure was marked by accomplishment, and controversy.
The department achieved national accreditation under his leadership, but in

It was just three weeks ago that Betty Shabazz was burned over 80 percent of
her body- the fire allegedly set by her 12 year old grandson.
Shabazz had been in critical condition since then.
The mother of six girls was a university dean who fought for civil rights
long after her husband's death-
Betty Shabazz was 61.

Americans continue to line up on both sides of the tobacco war- People in
Southwest Virginia are no different.
They're debating the pros and cons of the landmark settlement reached last
week between 40-states and the tobacco industry.

reduce the number of young people beginning to smoke.
The deal calls for strict limits on tobacco advertising at sporting events--

The central part of the state got more than a foot of rain over the weekend.
The Virginia Municipal League says Jim Gilmore's campaign pledge to
eliminate the tax on cars and trucks will cost more than twice what he says.

The Municipal League says Gilmore's cut will drain 1-point-3 BILLION dollars
from state coffers, that's more than twice Gilmore's estimates.
It crept up from North Carolina ... carried along by the wind and rain.
Now blue mold is killing vast acres of tobacco plants in the Virginia

The reigning Miss Virginia- Michelle Kang will help crown her successor
this coming weekend.
Twenty-four women from across the Commonwealth are gathering in Roanoke for
rehearsals of the Miss Virginia Scholarship Pageant.
There are also plenty of other activities planned this week, including
a cookout at Mill Mountain park and a visit to Hunting Hills Country Club.
The pageant will be held this Saturday at the Roanoke Civic Center.
The winner will represent Virginia in the Miss American pageant.

A study of women with migraines found 41 percent had a hysterectomy,
40-percent had ovarian cysts, and 61 percent had irregular periods.

Birth control pills tend to make migraines worse, so if you're on the pill

The American Medical Association ha issued guidelines to help patients die
The guidelines feature eight elements of quality care, ranging from giving
patients the right to discuss the end of their care... to making sure doctors
can manage pain, fatigue and depression.
Patients will also be able to wear a medic-alert bracelet that lets users
keep their end-of-life wishes on file.
The AMA is continuing it's opposition to doctor assisted suicide.
If you're taking a cholesterol lowering drug to prevent heart attacks, you
may be getting an added benefit...

A analysis of 12 studies reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine finds
drugs such as Zocor and Pravachol reduce the risk of stroke by 27 percent.
Despite those results, doctors say they want to learn more before routinely
recommending cholesterol lowering drugs to prevent strokes.

with great news for all of you Atlanta Braves fans.
Chipper Jones, who collided with teammate Mike Mordecai yesterday, and hurt
his left knee will only miss a couple of games.
Before the injury, Jones homered to help lead Atlanta to a 12 to 5 win over
The club's trainers and a team physician examined the knee this morning and
found no structural damage.
However, this is the same knee Jones
injured in the spring of 1994 when he missed the entire season.
The Roanoke Country Club is a busy place this week hosting the Virginias
