A severe vibration forced a Delaware man to make a crash landing in Bedford
County last night.
The Single Engine Cessna landed in a field off route 1-22 about two miles
south of Bedford.
Pilot Glen Murray was the only one on board.
Authorities say he did not appear injured and refused treatment at the
Murray says he was flying over Route 1-22 when the trouble started.
He was trying to make a smooth landing, but came up short when he tried to
avoid a house.
A federal judge is expected to rule Monday on whether Virginia's parental
notification law will take effect July 1st.
Attorneys for Planned Parenthood this morning asked U.S. District Judge
James Turk to issue a temporary restraining order to keep the statute from
Their main argument is over the part of the law that says a judge MAY let a
girl obtain an abortion without notifying her parents if the judge feels she's
mature enough to make the decision on her own.
They believe that's too vague, that it should read SHALL.
At one point, Judge Turk wanted to know how the state would be hurt if
implementation of the law was delayed for 30 days.
Both sides have until Friday to file final written briefs.

For the second time in two weeks the Winston-Salem based bank has announced
a big purchase in the Old Dominion.
Earlier this month it was Jefferson Bancshares of Charlottesville.
Today, it's a much bigger fish, Central Fidelity Banks.
Wachovia says the deal will position it as the leading bank in Virginia with
335 branch offices and deposits of nine- point- nine- billion- dollars.
We'll have more on the effects this will have on Virginia's banking industry

The 12- year- old grandson of Malcolm X may be facing a murder charge for
killing his grandmother.
Betty Shabazz died yesterday from burns suffered in a fire at her apartment
on June first.
Malcolm Shabazz is accused of setting the blaze.
No matter what the charge Malcolm's attorney says the boy faces a maximum
sentence of 18 months because of his age.
An 18- year- old New Jersey woman will be in court later today to be
formally charged with murdering her newborn.
The baby's body was found in a trash can in a restroom at the teen's prom.

A horrific crime in Flint, Michigan has taken on the tone of a twisted

Police say two teenaged boys and a teenaged girl, hopped a freight from

They apparently rode too far and got off in a rundown neighborhood.
The teens began looking for a phone when they were surrounded by a group of
young men who dragged them into a park where they raped the girl and shot all
three in the head.

Roanoke's Police chief was on medical leave in recent months fighting
M-David Hooper died yesterday after 30-years of service.
He came to western Virginia in the summer of 19-67.

Fire destroyed the home of an Amherst County family last night.
A passerby spotted smoke coming from the roof of the house on Dixie Airport

Meantime in Northeast Roanoke last night fire gutted a vacant house.
The fire broke out in this house on the 900 block of Madison Avenue.
Roanoke's assistant fire marshal says arson appears to be the cause of the
Roanoke Fire fighters say the house was condemned, but it appears someone
was living inside.

A controversial junkyard in New Castle may change town policy.
The junkyard sits alongside two of the town's most historic buildings.
Many call it an eyesore, but say they don't blame its owner, Jack Oliver,
for putting it there.
Oliver had to move his junkyard from a wooded area in neighboring Craig
County because it was in violation of its zoning codes.
So he just brought it to a place without any...the town of New Castle.
Oliver's already put up a fence and brought vehicles on the lot.

More than 300 jobs could soon be on their way to Virginia compliments of a
C-S-X and Norfolk Southern yesterday formally asked for federal approval of
their ten- billion dollar plan to split Conrail.
The two Virginia-based railroads submitted an application with the U-S
Surface Transportation Board.
A decision is NOT expected until next year.
The railroads said dividing Conrail
will save money and improve shipment of cargo.

((The Vipers dedicated this season to Allison Fullen, their friend and
teammate who was killed April 20 in a car accident on route 24 in Bedford.
Allison's number has been embroidered on the team's jerseys and in left field
on the Viper logo. She was a bright student at Stewartsville Elementary, where
her memory lives on through a tree friends and teachers planted in early May.
Her contributions in life are rooted far deeper than talents on the softball
Last week, the Fullen's attended their first game since the tragedy. Kim wore
her daughter's jersey, and the Vipers scored 19 runs to win. For the team,
there truly is an angel in the outfield.

The new Miss Virginia will be crowned at the Roanoke Civic Center this
Twenty-four women from across the Commonwealth are gathering in Roanoke for
rehearsals of the Miss Virginia Scholarship Pageant.
There are also plenty of other activities planned this week, including
a public appearance tonight at the Hotel Roanoke and a visit to Hunting Hills
The winner will represent Virginia in the Miss America pageant.
