JERRY LINENGER/ASTRONAUT: ITS AS CRITICAL AS IT CAN GET. DECOMPRESSION AND

Jerry Linenger was the astronaut aboard Mir last February when a fire erupted.
But last nights accident was far more damaging. It happened during a
practice docking with an unmanned cargo ship.
During the re-docking, the Mir unexplainably lost control of the
cargo ship. The ship then drifted slaming into this solar panel then bouncing
off and hitting the spectr module.
A video, taken by astronauts, shows gashes in the module, a mangled solar
panel and dents everywhere. The collision even caused a small hole
allowing precious oxygen to leak.

Inside that sealed station are several vital U.S. scientific experiments

The damaged station was also the home of the only
U.S. astronaut on board Michael Foale.
FRANK CULBERTSON/NASA MIR DIR.: THE SITUATION IS STABLE AND
SAFE FOR THE CREW AT THIS TIME. BUT THE NEXT FEW DAYS WILL BE CRITICAL, BEING
ABLE TO GAIN ENOUGH CAPABILITY ON MIR TO CONTINUE OPERATIONS."
So NASA now will now have to evaluate what its next step will be. A
step that could include the withdrawl of the us from the Mir Space Station.
