Two people were killed early this morning when a pickup truck drove over an embankment on Mill Mountain, crashed and burned.
The driver, 25- year- old Christopher DeWeese of Salem survived. Officials say DeWeese sped off after a police officer recognized him at the Mill Mountain parking area.
Police say they were not chasing him when the accident occurred.. by the time the officer caught up with him, the truck had crashed and was burning.
Two passengers in the truck were trapped and burned beyond recognition.
Charges are pending.

Cleanup efforts are continuing through the night in Japan after a tanker ran aground in Tokyo Bay.

The resulting oil slick left more than a dozen people sickened from the fumes and it is slowly drifting toward Tokyo.
The tanker was carrying more than SEVENTY- FIVE million gallons of oil.
Authorities say the tanker appears to have stopped leaking crude.

A suspected bank robber is in jail thanks to some quick police work and a helpful bystander.

A man armed with a handgun walked into this First Federal bank and demanded money.
He escaped on foot, but was spotted a few minutes later by Investigator Larry Booth.
While a citizen used Booth's police radio to direct other officers to the scene, Booth struggled to arrest the suspect.
34- year- old Darryl C. Delancey was finally caught, hiding in some nearby bushes.
He's being held without bond on robbery and firearms charges.
Police say Delancey was just paroled last fall, after serving 13 years in prison for ANOTHER bank robbery in Virginia Beach.

After making his mark as a swimmer at the University of South Carolina, where he knew Hootie and Blowfish long before America did, Phillips failed in his attempt to earn a spot on 96 olympic team as a freestyle swimmer, finishing 16th at the trials.
