Two people were killed early this morning when a pickup truck drove over an
embankment on Mill Mountain, crashed and burned.
The driver, 25- year- old Christopher DeWeese of Salem survived.
Officials say DeWeese sped off after a police officer recognized him at the
Mill Mountain parking area.
Police say they were not chasing him when the accident occurred.. by the
time the officer caught up with him, the truck had crashed and was burning.
Two passengers in the truck were trapped and burned beyond recognition.
Charges are pending.
Planned Parenthood tried to stop the Parental notification law from going
through, but now that the law is on the books officials say they'll comply with

The news came yesterday from the Allen administration at a UPS distribution
center that's hiring a few Charlottesville area welfare recipients -- as THAT
region begins "workfare."
The first region whose two year time limit expired includes Orange County.
Lynchburg and Bedford's timetable to kick any non-working recipients out of
the system comes in October.
A full third of the state, including Roanoke, has yet to even start the two
year welfare-to-work timeline.
Cleanup efforts are continuing through the night in Japan after a tanker
ran aground in Tokyo Bay.
It spilled nearly four million gallons of crude oil, the worst spill ever in
The resulting oil slick left more than a dozen people sickened from the
fumes and it is slowly drifting toward Tokyo.

Meanwhile, today Governor Allen is expected to announce that he's forming a
task force to oversee the negotiations of the national tobacco settlement.
That task force would also make recommendations on what would be in
Virginia's best interests.
A Roanoke man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for murder.
Michael Shrawn Benton was convicted of killing Larry Edward Donahue on
Chapman Avenue last September.
The motive is in dispute, but in a summary of the evidence today, a
prosecutor said the victim allegedly approached Benton to buy drugs.
The deal went sour, and as Donahue was walking away, Benton took out a gun
and fired at Donahue.
The bullet hit Donahue in the back of the head, killing him instantly.
The Reverend Robert Schuller is defending himself against accusations that
he assaulted a male flight attendant on a weekend flight to New York City.

medals these days, but instead coaching and teaching 125 youngsters each day.
After making his mark as a swimmer at the University of South Carolina,
where he knew Hootie and Blowfish long before America did, Phillips failed in
his attempt to earn a spot on 96 olympic team as a freestyle swimmer, finishing
16th at the trials.
But as a coach, he appears to have all the mettle needed to succeed.
Phillips hopes to eventually land a job coaching in college, but for now he's
content to help this group of kids have some fun, improve their strokes, and
also find out how to best reach their potential.))

Three men in San Diego spent almost two weeks dealing with the ups and downs

Twenty two contestants started out on the Big Dipper roller coaster in the
"Whril 'Til You Hurl" contest.
After TWELVE days and THREE THOUSAND laps of riding, eating and sleeping on
the coaster, three contestants remained.
