Two men, blown off a barge last night by a powerful fireworks explosion are
The Coast Guard and other rescue boats spent the day searching the
Mississippi River in Alton, Illinois.
Storms had forced rescue workers to call off their search until tomorrow
One man was killed on board the barge.
Authorities say the men were wearing heavy flame retardant clothing that
may have dragged them under the fast river current.
Fire damaged a home in Bedford County today.
This house off Quarterwood Road near Montvale filled with smoke around 2:30
The owner is out of town.
A neighbor watching the property saw the smoke and called the fire
The fire appeared to have started in the garage.
No one was hurt.
There's no word yet on the cause--
Mission controllers are using words like "spectacular" and "perfect" in
describing today's landing of the Mars Pathfinder.
The spacecraft came down almost exacly on target on the surface of the
planet, and has just begun sending back pictures.

This is the first picture transmitted by pathfinder from the surface of
Simple, black and white images of the lander, scientists are using to
determine the craft's condition after its historic touch down on the red
Cheers erupted from Mission Control when word came that Pathfinder had
survived it's risky trip thru the Martian atmosphere.
Just ninety minutes after Pathfinder bounced its way to a landing on the
Martian soil, radio signals confirmed the lander was not far from its intended
Scientists and government officials alike were elated at how well the
little robot was performing.

Pathfinder is the first american probe to visit mars since the viking
landers made history back in the 1970's.
Using a microwave oven sized rover called Cojourner, the pathfinder mission
is to survey the Martian landscape.
It doesnt carry instruments to detect organisms, but this mission is just
the first step in NASA's search for life on the red planet.

As the court battle continues over Virginia's new parental notification law,
it's chief defender is waging a political battle as well.
New Republican attorney general Richard Cullen said he was "shocked" to hear
Democratic candidate Bill Dolan question the law's wording.

Two House of Delegates candidates set off some political fireworks as they
squared off today in Lynchburg.

eliminate personal property taxes in Virginia.

Charles Kuralt, who chronicled the lives of countless, average Americans,
died today in New York City, with complications from Lupus.
He was 62.

The place is alive with alien lore.
They're celebrating the 50th- anniversary of a purported flying saucer
crash-- and cashing in with some unusual items.
A Salem man has died from Legionnaire's disease.
But the Roanoke County Health Department says it's just an isolated
Anna Kennedy says there's no need to worry about an outbreak.
The victim was identified as a man in his late fifties who worked for the
Salem city schools.
A Legionnaire's outbreak in Montgomery County last year resulted in 23
cases of the disease, it proved fatal in two people.
A natural immune reaction in thousands of Americans keeps deadly skin cancer
from coming back.
Now scientists are bottling that protection.
The National Cancer Institute is funding tests on hundreds of melanoma
patients, with two experimental vaccines they hope will keep the killer at bay.
Melanoma kills more than seven-thousand Americans every year.
Sun exposure is the main cause, and anyone who had even one bad sunburn
as a child is at risk.

The start of today's men's singles match between Pete Sampras and Todd
Woodbridge was delayed for more than an hour and 40 minutes. But when play got
under way it didn't take Sampras long to beat Woodbridge and advance.
