Good evening, Pathfinder has astronomers gasping with excitement tonight.
Pathfinder began sending out pictures of the martian survace this evening,
after a perfect landing and deployment.
Veteran CBS newsman Charles Kuralt has died.
The man who drove a motorhome into the heart of America passed away at a New
York Hospital of complications of lupus.
And thousands braved a rainy forecast to watch tonight's fireworks display
at victory stadium.

Valley residents celebrated Independence Day with a bang tonight.
Roanoke's Victory stadium was filled with music, fireworks and spectators.
Those spectators for Music for Americans have cleared the stadium, but are
they still standing in the parking lot waiting for a bus?
For the first time there was no parking allowed at the stadium or nearby
Instead organizers shuttled in people for the big event.
Denise Allen joins us now from Victory Stadium.

Scientists are examining the first color pictures sent from the surface of
the red planet tonight.
The pictures show a reddish orange landscape littered with boulders.
In the distance you can see hills rising on the horizon.
The pathfinder rover is visible in the foreground. One of the craft's
deflated airbags is partially blocking it's path.
Scientists will raise one of path finder's petals to get it out of the way.

The Roanoke County health department has reported another death from
Anna Kennedy from the health department says this is not an outbreak.
She says it has been determined yesterday's death was an isolated incident.
The victim was identified as a man in his late fifties from Salem who worked
for the Salem city schools.
A Legionnaire's outbreak in Montgomery County last year resulted in 23 cases
of the disease, including two people who died.
His life was spent focusing on the lives of ordinary people across
America... and they loved him.
Former CBS newsman Charles Kuralt died today, from complications of Lupus.
Through his career, he covered stories from the Congo to Vietnam.
But in the 60's, he drove his way into the heart of America, traveling
through all 50 states in his motor home as part of his "On the Road" series.

Kuralt retired from CBS Sunday Morning in 1993.
Charles Osgood, who replaced him said "he looked for heros, and he was a

Divers have suspended their search for two men missing after a fireworks
explosion in Illinois.
Officials believe the two man drowned after an explosion blew them off a
barge that was launching fireworks from the Mississippi River.

It was David versus Goliath today at Coney Island's annual hot dog eating

as Japan's 5-foot-8, 135 pound Hirofumi Nakajima took on 6-foot-7, 330 pound

Despite his size advantage, Krachie could not out eat the Japanese champ.
Nakajima easily beat his 19 opponents by eating 24 and a half hot dogs in 12

The new champ says he was a little nervous about winning.
He was afraid if he won, Krachie might try to bite his ears like Mike Tyson.

The Lynchburg Hillcats beat the Salem Avalanche tonight at City Stadium by
a score of 11 to 5.
Armas Ramirez and Tony Robinson both homered for the Hillcats. Lynchburg
sweeps the two game series and the Avalanche continues its road trip with three
games in Durham beginning tomorrow afternoon.
Three Baltimore pitchers combined on five innings of shout relief and Lenny
Webster singled in the winning run as the Orioles beat the Detroit Tigers 4 to

And Pete Sampras, The top men's singles player in the world, advances to
the finals at Wimbledon.
Pete Sampras and Todd Woodbridge had to wait for more than an hour and 40
minutes to start their semi final match today at Wimbledon.
But when play got under way it didn't take Sampras long to beat Woodbridge
