He was accused of forcing a student to drink- or face a beating.
The judge said the state did not prove its case.

Charges are dropped against a Virginia Tech football player- accused of
forcing another student to drink heavily- or face a beating.
The judge threw out the charges againt Bradley Baylor-
On the night in question- Todd Pringle's blood alcohol level was FOUR times
the legal limit-
His head was also partially shaved when a Blackburg police officer found him
unconscious on the sidewalk last July.
Pringle later told authorities a Virginia Tech football player forced him to

Pringle testified several others were also involved but he could not name

Baylor says Pringle was drunk when he wandered into his house but that he
never touched him or forced him to drink.
Another Virginia Tech football player accused in a fight that injured two
track team members will serve two days in jail.
One count of assault and battery against Sean Sullivan was dismissed this
But Judge Ray Grubbs sentenced Sullivan to time behind bars for the other
count-- involving Jonathon Nelson.

connection with the same incident.
But Judge Grubbs dismissed the case against Nathaniel Williams.
A North Carolina company plans to build a hog farm in Pittsylvania County,
but some folks don't want it there-
and as Tina Tenret reports county supervisors might turn the farm away.

The Right to Farm Act allows the hog facility to enter Pittsylvania County
without a public hearing or special use permit.
One man says he called the A-C-L-U today to see if the Act was
Senator Charles Hawkins voted for the act in 1994.

Supervisor Fred Ingram, who voted for the legislation enabling this hog
facility, now suggests writing a letter to the North Carolina company telling
them not to come.
The board will consider the suggestion next Tuesday.

A former state Lieutenant Governor is dead.
Henry Howell died in his home today after a long bout with cancer.
Political life for Howell began in 1949 while helping to run a primary
campaign for Francis Pickens Miller.
Before that the Norfolk native served as a law clerk for two federal judges,
later opening his own law practice.
Many black voters and unionists rallied behind the liberal Democrat for his
efforts to take on big business.
When campaigning his motto was "Keep the Big Boys Honest."
Henry Howell was 76.
The first state in the nation to elect a black governor is breaking new
ground within its borders.
Republican John Hager is running for lieutenant governor in a wheelchair.
And that's also a Virginia first.

A 37-year old man is heading to prison after abducting his wife and killing
her on their front lawn last year.
Mark Cole dragged his wife across the lawn last June and fatally shot her
once in the head.
His six-year old son testified against him in Halifax Circuit Court today.
Cole has been sentenced to life in prison plus 13 years.
This was the second trial for Cole.
He claimed a fellow prisoner's uncle, who was on the jury, admitted the jury
acted improperly the first time.
But the juror in question did not have a nephew in prison, and the prisoner
denied ever saying that to Cole.
Cole could now face perjury charges according to the Halifax County
Penny Stallins got out of jail today.
The former amateur golf champion served more than five months in jail for
possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
Keith Humphry talked with Stallins just hours after her release.

the message the leader of her drug addiction support group had for her.

somebody who needed to be locked up? RIGHT.))
Her drug addiction goes back more than a decade. At first the three- time
winner of the Roanoke Valley Hall of Fame Women's Golf Tournament was heavily
medicated all the time.

The bodies of two men and one woman were discovered in the back room of a
Starbucks coffee shop in the Georgetown section of Washington D-C.
Another employee arriving for her job at five this morning found the bodies.
All three had been shot in the head.
Jury selection began today for the woman accused of extorting cash from Bill
Autum Jackson is the 22 year old who says Cosby is her dad.
She's accused of trying to extort 40 million dollars from Cosby- by
publically claiming she's the actor's daughter.

Jurors may never find out
The judge is limiting evidence solely to the question of whether Jackson is
guilty of extortion.
Thousands of fans turned out for the funeral of Actor Jimmy Stewart.
Only family and friends were allowed inside the private service.
The funeral was held at the Beverly Hills Presbyterian church where Stewart
and his family worshipped for years.
Inside the church the organ played hymns- ending with Shenandoah- the title
of one of Stewart's films.
Stewarts daughter quoted the movie "It's a wonderful life"- saying No man is
poor who has friends.
Jimmy Stewart died at home Wednesday. He was 89.

The Rush plays a preseason exhibition game at Blacksburg HIgh School on July

Major League baseball's time to shine is tonight, as Cleveland's Jacob's
Field hosts the annual all-star game.
Yesterday fans were treated to all kinds of activities including the always
popular homerun derby.
Nearly 45 thousand fans turned out just to watch some of the game's best long

McGuire, Griffey, and and Brady were some of the favorites to win.
But two others stole the show.
Colorado's Larry Walker, who has been on pace to hit .400 all season put on a
real show hitting 9 homers in each of the first two rounds for a total of 18.
But in the finals, Tino Martinez of the Yankees outduelled Walker hitting 3
homers to his 1 to win the overall title.
Martinez has hit 28 homers for the Yanks this season.

As an artist with the Yankee Whittler in Boones Mill, Dwayne Hodges was used
to creating small wooden sculptures for a handful of customers.
But, his latest work is stopping traffic and turning an ordinary street
corner into a local landmark.

about 9 yards away.
And, it needed to be removed.
The only problem was its weight. At a little more than two tons it toppled
this truck as workers tried to uproot it in May.
It left the Hart family with a 12 foot chunk of wood-- jagged and without
limbs--looking worse than before.

This piece cost three thousand dollars and took Hodges about 21 days and 168
hours to complete.
It's turned a wooden eye-sore into a sculpted eye-catcher on the corner of a
