Political life for Howell began in 1949 while helping to run a primary campaign for Francis Pickens Miller.
Before that the Norfolk native served as a law clerk for two federal judges, later opening his own law practice.
Many black voters and unionists rallied behind the liberal Democrat for his efforts to take on big business.
When campaigning his motto was "Keep the Big Boys Honest."
Henry Howell was 76.

A 37-year old man is heading to prison after abducting his wife and killing her on their front lawn last year.

Mark Cole dragged his wife across the lawn last June and fatally shot her once in the head.
His six-year old son testified against him in Halifax Circuit Court today.
Cole has been sentenced to life in prison plus 13 years.
This was the second trial for Cole.
He claimed a fellow prisoner's uncle, who was on the jury, admitted the jury acted improperly the first time.
But the juror in question did not have a nephew in prison, and the prisoner denied ever saying that to Cole.
Cole could now face perjury charges according to the Halifax County Commonwealth's Attorney.

The funeral was held at the Beverly Hills Presbyterian church where Stewart and his family worshipped for years.
Inside the church the organ played hymns- ending with Shenandoah- the title of one of Stewart's films.
Stewarts daughter quoted the movie "It's a wonderful life"- saying No man is poor who has friends.
Jimmy Stewart died at home Wednesday. He was 89.

The team is 2-and-0 after yesterday's 63-to-60 win over Maine.

Tree-Sculpture

As an artist with the Yankee Whittler in Boones Mill, Dwayne Hodges was used to creating small wooden sculptures for a handful of customers.
But, his latest work is stopping traffic and turning an ordinary street corner into a local landmark.

((It started out as a diseased and dying pin oak tree much like this one about 9 yards away.
And, it needed to be removed.
The only problem was its weight. At a little more than two tons it toppled this truck as workers tried to uproot it in May.
It left the Hart family with a 12 foot chunk of wood-- jagged and without limbs--looking worse than before.
