"Mary", who doesn't want her last name used, is suffering from pulmonary

Fenfluramine and Phentermine are the center of intense scrutiny at the Mayo
Clinic.. after two dozen women developed serious health complications like
Mary's.
DR. HEIDI CONNOLLY, CARDIOLOGIST, MAYO CLINIC: THEY ALL DEVELOPED THE SAME
UNUSUAL FORM OF HEART VALVE DISEASE. NONE DIED. FIVE NEEDED SURGERY.
This is not the first time fen-phen has been labelled risky.
About a year ago, doctors discovered a possible connection between
pulmonary hypertension and the two F-D-A approved drugs when used in
combination with one another.
DR. JONATHAN HALPERIN, MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTER: BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT
BECAUSE IT'S THE FIRST TIME WE'VE DISCOVERED VALVULAR DISEASE AS WELL.
According to the National Institutes of Health, 58 million Americans are
considered obese.
18 million are prescribed fen-phen.. a number that is on the
rise.
And while 24 may sound like a small number of patients to be concerned
about, comparatively, doctors think the potential health risk is serious
enough to go public now.. with information that wasn't supposed to be released
until late august.
MARY: I THINK MAYBE THE PUBLICITY ABOUT THIS IS REALLY GOING TO HELP MAKE
PEOPLE AWARE OF IT AND I DON'T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE, IF IT'S
PREVENTABLE.
The F-D-A is taking it seriously as well.
