This is not the first time fen-phen has been labelled risky.

JONATHAN HALPERIN, MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTER: BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT BECAUSE IT'S THE FIRST TIME WE'VE DISCOVERED VALVULAR DISEASE AS WELL.
According to the National Institutes of Health, 58 million Americans are considered obese.
18 million are prescribed fen-phen.. a number that is on the rise.
And while 24 may sound like a small number of patients to be concerned about, comparatively, doctors think the potential health risk is serious enough to go public now.. with information that wasn't supposed to be released until late august. MARY: I THINK MAYBE THE PUBLICITY ABOUT THIS IS REALLY GOING TO HELP MAKE PEOPLE AWARE OF IT AND I DON'T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE, IF IT'S PREVENTABLE.
The F-D-A is taking it seriously as well.
This week it will alert physicians across the country to these Mayo Clinic findings.. and researchers are now planning a large-scale study of Fen-Phen and its risks.
