Former state Lieutenant Governor Henry Howell died in his home yesterday after a long bout with cancer.
Political life for Howell began in 19-49 while helping to run a primary campaign for Francis Pickens Miller.
Before that the Norfolk native served as a law clerk for two federal judges, later opening his own law practice.
Many black voters and unionists rallied behind the liberal Democrat for his efforts to take on big business.
Henry Howell was 76.

The unrest and violence is in response to Britain's decision over the weekend to allow Protestant marchers through a Catholic neighborhood.
Rioters have been throwing gasoline bombs at police and officers have returned fire with plastic bullets.
So far one policeman has been shot and an eleven- year- old boy suffered severe burns when he was accidently hit with a gasoline bomb.

The only problem was its weight. At a little more than two tons it toppled this truck as workers tried to uproot it in May.
