If the design empire of Laura Ashley has a crown jewel, it just might be Keswick Hall...an elegant country house hotel nestled among Virginia's horse farms.
Laura Ashley dreamed of creating intimate hotels filled with her designs. But it wasn't until after her death in 1985 that her husband, Sir Bernard, and their four children fulfilled that dream.
Keswick Hall is on the site of an old estate where Civil War soldiers once sought shelter.
Son David Ashley provided our very personal tour.
The first thing you notice is--no front desk. A porter greets you. BUDDY LEFFERS, KESWICK HALL PORTER: WE WOULD LIKE PEOPLE WHO ARE STAYING AT KESWICK HALL TO FEEL LIKE THEY'RE STAYING AT SOMEONE'S HOME. SO WE TRY TO GET THAT ATTITUDE IMMEDIATELY. (:07) DAVID ASHLEY: THIS IS THE FORMAL ENTRANCE HERE. AS YOU CAN SEE, IT'S A LOT LARGER THAN YOU'D EXPECT FOR A HOTEL WITH ONLY 48 ROOMS.
And it's not just Laura Ashley designs that are showcased in this intensely personal setting. These were her actual possessions. DAVID: THIS IS THE ACTUAL ROOM FROM MY MOTHER'S HOUSE IN 1985 IN BRUSSELS WITH THE FURNITURE AND EVERYTHING. EVEN THE RUGS AND COLOR ON THE WALLS AND THE CURTAINS. EVERYTHING! WHAT IS THIS ROOM CALLED? (DAVID) THIS ROOM IS THE DRAWING ROOM, IS WHAT EVERYONE CALLS IT HERE, BUT I CALL IT MY MOTHER'S STUDY. BECAUSE THIS WAS MY MOTHER'S STUDY IN BRUSSELS.
There are other extraordinary features.
The card room. The snooker room.
Each accented with antiques, and another hallmark of Keswick Hall: the art. DAVID: A LOT OF PEOPLE CONSIDER THIS TO BE THEIR MOST FAVORITE ROOM AND FAVORITE SUITE IN THE WHOLE HOTEL. THIS IS PART OF THE SUITE, WHICH IS A DINING ROOM.
It's 600-dollars a night. But you get a taste of the Ashley's eccentricities when you view the lowest priced room the house...at 225-dollars.
THIS IS THE GREEN ROOM, THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE ROOMS IN THE WHOLE HOTEL. CAN I SHOW YOU WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS ROOM BEST OF ALL? AND THE REASON WHY THIS ROOM IS SO DIFFICULT TO SELL SOMETIMES IS BECAUSE (HE JUMPS UP) THAT CHAP UP THERE. WHAT IS THAT? IT'S A PIKE.
