Police say the car was traveling at least 76 miles per hour on the residential street.
But witnesses say it was closer to 100.
The car sideswiped a utility pole, spun out of control and hit a second pole with such force it pulled it out of the ground.
The driver, 29- year- old Ronald William Smith died at the scene. Police say he was driving on a suspended license.

The state Health Department is investigating any links in an unusually high number of E coli bacteria cases last month in Virginia.
The 27 reported cases was well above the eleven cases reported in June 1996 and six cases in June 1995. State health officials say the problems occurred all over the state.
