A local grocery store closed its doors yesterday, leaving employees jobless
with practically no notice.

at 6 p-m.
An hour earlier, employees at the store were called to an emergency
mandatory staff meeting.
They were all terminated and told the store would be shutting down.
One employee said management blamed the closing on poor sales.
But, the news was a surprise to almost everyone.

The horseshoe shape of a car that crashed in a northwest Roanoke
neighborhood yesterday tells much of the story.
Police say the car was traveling at least 76 miles per hour on the
But witnesses say it was closer to 100.
The car sideswiped a utility pole, spun out of control and hit a second pole
with such force it pulled it out of the ground.
The driver, 29- year- old Ronald William Smith died at the scene. Police
say he was driving on a suspended license.

Investigators from the Army Safety Center at Fort Rucker, Alabama are on
their way to Fort Bragg to investigate yesterday's deadly helicopter crash.

Henry Howell may have lost three bids for governor of Virginia --
But he's being remembered as the man who brought down the exclusionary Byrd
machine of his own Democratic party.
Howell died Monday at his Norfolk home at age 76.
