44-people are feared dead after a Cuban airliner crashed into the ocean last
The Russian-made plane plunged into the sea shortly after taking off from
Santiago de Cuba.
Cuban rescue workers on naval boats and air force planes have found
17-bodies so far.
They continue to search the waters off the island's southeastern coast but
say there are no signs of survivors.
There's no word on the cause of the crash.
Also in Cuba-- government officials there are blaming U-S-based attackers
for a pair of explosions at two top luxury hotels in Havana.

Three workers are missing on an aircraft carrier leaking deadly methane gas
in Newport News.
About 18-hundred workers were evacuated from the Harry S. Truman when the

A fund-raising car wash in Locust, North Carolina ended on a tragic note
A truck careened into the crowd, killing a woman waiting for a wash and a
A softball team was trying to raise money to attend a state tournament.
The teenage driver of the truck hasn't been charged-- police are still
trying to determine if the truck had a mechanical malfunction.
Workers at "The New Bob Jones Petting Zoo" are trying to let people know
their animals are safe.
This comes after a judge convicted, 30-year-old Donnie Chaffee, a fair
worker, of animal cruelty.
Chaffee, of Virginia Beach, was fined 200-dollars and sentenced to 90 days
in jail for striking this elephant-- Butch-- several times with a section of
Chaffe testified in Salem General District Court yesterday that he thought
the 7000-pound elephant was going to hurt someone with his trunk.
A petting zoo attendant and witness says Butch was no threat.

Several preservation groups say the National Forest is getting axed again.
A federal judge gave the go-ahead for the timber sale of old-growth
woodlands in Alleghany County.
Members of Virginians for Wilderness failed in their legal attempts to stop
the U.S. Forest Service from logging the area.
Preserve Appalachian Wilderness and Shenandoah Ecosystems Defense Group have
joined in the fight.
Together the three groups are trying to educate citizens on what will be
lost if the 36-hundred acre tract of old-growth forest is logged.

Al and Tipper Gore's eldest daughter tied the knot with a New York Physician
at Washington, DC's National Cathedral.
