Powell says it's a miracle no one was injured considering the time the blaze
He says a fire such as this can be prevented by keeping matches out of the

Three Virginia shipyard workers are dead following a methane gas leak on an
aircraft carrier yesterday.
Rescue workers have been looking for the men since the gas was discovered
coming from a sewage pipe yesterday.
They had been working on pipes six decks below the flight deck on the USS
They were found shortly before midnight inside a compartment filled with the
One victim was from Virginia Beach, another from Newport News... the third
has not been identified.
18 hundred people were evacuated from the ship when the leak was first
discovered, two people were hospitalized.
Workers were told normal operations will resume tomorrow.

It's been nearly a year since T-W-A Flight 800 exploded off Long Island, New
York killing all 230 people on board.
Investigators say the plane's center fuel tank exploded, but the question of
why has gone unanswered.
Tomorrow, the National Transportation Safety Board will begin a series of
tests to find the answer to that question.
The N-T-S-B will fly a similar Boeing 747 from New York's Kennedy airport.
The plane's center fuel tank will be connected to numerous instruments
during the flight test period.
While the investigation into mechanical failure is gearing up, the criminal
part of the investigation is winding down.
Assistant F-B-I Director Nicholas Kallstrom says the investigation is in its
He also says investigators believe thay can explain eyewitness reports of an
object rising toward the jet just before the crash, but he would not elaborate.
And according to a New York newspaper, authorities have identified three
more victims of the crash.
12 of the 230 victims still have not been identified.
The Roanoke chapter of the N- Double-A-C-P is unhappy with the management
of the Hotel Roanoke, and leaders of the group say they're preparing to take
their concerns to the city and Virginia Tech.
The local chapter initiated discussions with the hotel after the national
N-Double-A-C-P announced a boycott of several chains including Doubletree
Hotels--which manages the Hotel Roanoke.
But members of the civil rights organization say the hotel's management has
not been responsive to their requests.

Jim and Esta Wilson have donated 122 acres of undeveloped land adjacent to
the Smart View Recreation Area.
This is the first easement donated to the Virginia Outdoors Foundation.
It took the V-O-F about four years to work out the details.
The conservation easement protects the property from development that would

Tonight is the world's largest pig's last night in Salem-- as the Salem fair

A date is on the calendar for residents wanting to express their opinion
concerning the sale of alcohol during "Pulaski Rangers" baseball games.
Residents opposed to selling beer plan to present a petition.
They're concerned alcohol will increase the level of noise as well as car
