A teenager from Charlottesville is the first woman to use the state's parental notification law to get a judge's permission to have an abortion.
Planned Parenthood officials say the 17-year old asked for the judicial waiver because she was afraid "her parents would kill her" if they found out what she wanted.
The new law requires Virginia doctors to notify a parent or guardian of a girl 17 and under, before performing an abortion.
Planned Parenthood has challenged the law in federal court.
David Nova of Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge says he hasn't heard of any similar cases yet in western Virginia.
