Heavy smoke is filling the skies over Lynchburg as firefighters are
struggling at this hour to contain a blaze that is gutting a downtown building.
The first call went out around 9:15 after smoke was spotted coming from this
building at 860 Church Street.
The three- story structure is home to Dawson- Ford- Garbee Real Estate,
Preston- Hopkins Printing company, and the Marshall Lodge.
Six engine companies and two ladder trucks have been called in to fight the
The fire has broken through the roof, and just a short while ago, fire
commanders ordered all of the crews out of the building to attack the blaze
from the outside.
Heavy damage can be seen on the first floor offices of the real estate
Smoke from the fire is activating other alarms in nearby buildings.
It is not known whether anyone was inside when the fire broke out.

A gas pipeline explodes setting dozens of homes on fire-
and killing one woman.
The pipe blew up this afternoon on the north end of Indianapolis.
Six homes were destroyed- 50 others are damaged.
The woman's body was found in one of the burned out homes.
Construction workers using a backhoe apparently ruptured a gas main- It's
unclear what caused the gas to ignite.

Signet customers should not notice any major changes in their bank service,
besides a different name.
The banks hope to complete the deal by the end of this year.

A 17-year old boy is in custody, charged with Lynchburg's first murder of
31-year old Steven W. Withers was shot to death near the intersection of
15th and Monroe Streets last Tuesday.
Police have "not" discussed a possible motive for his killing.
Early Saturday, a Lynchburg officer stopped a taxicab for a routine traffic
They detained the teen who was riding with another man in the cab.
The teen was later charged with Withers' murder.
He's being held in Lynchburg's juvenile detention center.
