Within just a month, two of North Carolina's largest banks have cut some
huge merger deals in the Commonwealth.
In June Wachovia of Winston- Salem bought Central Fidelity.

This time, the deal involves First Union, one of the Roanoke Valley's

Len Besthoff reports this has become a trend in recent months.
Jean First Union has agreed to acquire Signet of Richmond,SUPER=@Len1;
giving the Charlotte bank a commanding market share in Virginia.

With this deal First Union moves to the top of the list in Virginia, with
over 17- percent of all deposits.
The two banks have some overlapping functions in Virginia, but First Union
says the bulk of its 2000 jobs in the Roanoke Valley will stay put.
One question is, how many of Signet's branches will First Union keep?
Last month Signet announced plans to sell 25 locations in our area, those
plans are now apparently on hold.

Despite a massive P-R campaign and a request for clemency from Pope John
Paul the Second, O'Dell is to be executed Wednesday for raping and murdering a
Virginia Beach woman in 1985.
The Italian delegation said it would welcome O'Dell's body for burial in
Palermo if he's executed-- as the inmate requested.
Governor Allen has refused a request for a D-N-A test, saying O'Dell's
conviction is based on other overwhelming evidence.
Today, his chief legal counsel heard arguments for clemency.
Former animal breeder Valery Green is on trial this evening-- she's
charged with threatening to burn down a Montgomery County woman's home.

Liz McKinney says Green obtained a Jack Russell terrier from her kennel.
McKinney says Green wanted it for her pet.

But a new study from Emory University suggests many parents have no idea how

Only one out of four, for instance, knew these drugs could have side
