The horse that carried Stonewall Jackson through the Civil War was honored at V-M-I yesterday.
Little Sorrel's (Sore-ol) bones were put to rest as a fife and drum corps played Dixie.

The cremated skeleton of the horse was buried at the base of a bronze statue of Jackson.
Stonewall rode the sorrel colored horse in his famous Shenandoah Valley Campaign in 18-62.
And the general was riding Little Sorrel a year later when he was mortally wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville.
After his master's death Little Sorrel lived on the V-M-I parade grounds until he died in 18-85.

That's according to some state lawmakers.
The board has already tentatively approved the optional approach.
A final vote on the issue is expected in September.

First Union Bank has acquired Signet Bank.
The merged bank, still calling itself "First Union" would serve 2-point-2 million customers in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.
First Union has assets of 143 billion dollars--compared with 12 billion dollars for Signet.
The merger is expected to be complete by the end of the year, pending approval by federal regulators and Signet shareholders.
