Rescue workers recovered the body of a six year-old boy who drowned today in
Roanoke River Wayside near Dixie Caverns.
It happened shortly after noon.
The boy, his brother, sister, and their father were apparently wading in the
river when the water got too deep-- rising above the children's heads.

Low water visibility and rain complicated the search. Rescue workers found
the body about an hour and a half later.
The boy's identity has not been released.
Authorities say there have been several drownings in that area of the river
in the past few years.
There will be no convenience store across the street from Cave Spring Junior
Tonight, the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors rejected a bid to change
the zoning on a parcel of land at the corner of Brambleton Avenue and Rosecrest
The owners wanted the zoning change, so they could allow the PMI company to
build a "country-store" gas station similar to this one.
But residents argued a store would entice students to cross the busy street.

Almost 300 former prison inmates from Lynchburg to Patrick County were
summoned for a surprise drug test yesterday.
They tested positive for cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines, or morphine --

It's the third "Operation Consequences" sting the state had done.
Operations in Richmond and Tidewater came up with a lower percentage of drug
users than the Southside sting.

Tire in Salem expires.

negotiating the deal are NOT close to a tentative agreement.

Three years ago workers at the plant engaged in a bitter, 11-week strike.
Yokohama Tire is one of the area's largest employers, with close to 900
Virginia Transformer and the Department of Labor have reached a settlement
in a discrimination case.
The Roanoke company allegedly discriminated against four qualified women
applying for work at the plant.
Virginia Transformer has signed a con-ciliation agreement on the matter.
While not admitting to any violation of the law, the company agreed to pay
the women a total of more than 75-thousand dollars.
It will also make the women job offers with retroactive seniority and other

Plans for a new corporate park in west Roanoke County continue to move
Earlier today, the Roanoke County Supervisors talked about buying more than
460 acres for the project.
Located off Interstate 81 near the Dixie Caverns interchange, the
Glenn-Mary site is one of the last large, undeveloped parcels in western
The supervisors have promised a development that will protect viewsheds and
minimize the impact on nearby neighborhoods.

The supervisors also heard from county school officials, who presented a
revised plan for school construction and improvements.
The supervisors plan to vote on financing for the 47-million dollar
proposal at their next meeting.
A Franklin County animal breeder is in jail tonight without bond.
A Montgomery County judge sentenced Valery Green to 30 days in jail, after
finding her guilty of threatening to burn a kennel owner's house.
Green's attorney Christopher Tuck says Green will appeal.
Prosecutor Phil Keith says sentencing guidelines recommend probation, but
because of the nature of the crime, the judge sent Green to jail.
Keith also maintains threatening to burn someone's home puts a person in
danger and therefore deserves incarceration.
But he adds, Green will probably only serve about two weeks behind bars.

The rail giant approved a "three for one" stock split, effective in

County Board of supervisors meeting.
The supervisor honored one of its own in Spike Harrison coach of the Group A
State champion Glenvar Girls softball team, Rodney Spradlin's Group Two
champion William Byrd baseball team was also recognized along with and the
Terriers State Championship creative writing team.
How low can you go was the question today during the final round of the
Roanoke Valley golf association's closing round.
Travis Horak followed his 67 at Blue Hills yesterday by shooting a 7 under
par 64 this afternoon at Countryside.
He was five under par at the 12-th hole, and he finished the tournament with
a 131 two day total for a 10-shot win in the Senior Division.
Darryl Byrd shot a two under par 69 today to finish 36 holes at 141 in
Lee Taylor won the Junior division, Matthew Gregory won the Pee Wee
division and Michael Kidd captured the Midget championship.
