The three year labor contract at Yokohama Tire has been extended.
More than 700 Salem Tire workers will NOT walk the picket line tonight.
Union officials and Yokohama management announced the extension this
Double Boxes/Connie and Andrew
Andrew Freiden has been monitoring the negotiations today-- Andrew, what can
you tell us?
Connie, the contract was scheduled to expire tonight at midnight, but
earlier this evening--
the United Steelworkers Union local 10-23 and Yokohama Tire issued a joint
statement...averting a possible midnight strike.

The statement reads the company and the union have agreed to extend their
labor contract until midnight next Tuesday.
The two sides will resume negotiations at this local hotel Thursday.
At a shift change earlier in the day, Yokohama tire workers said they've
been kept in the dark about negotiations.

A source close to union leaders tells News 7 the two sides are very close
to working out an agreement..
The statement also says that both parties have made significant progress in
the talks, and that they just need more time to study proposals.))
The two sides will continue talks tomorrow, and then take a break Friday and

So no agreement was reached?
That's right, this is just a 6-day extension of the current labor contract.
Now, the possibility of a strike is delayed until Tuesday.
At 9-16 tonight, 54-year old Joseph Roger O'Dell the Third was put to death,
by lethal injection at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt.
Late this afternoon, Governor George Allen denied his request for clemency,
and the U-S Supreme Court rejected a stay of execution.
The case attracted the attention of the Italian media-- as well as Pope
John Paul and Mother Teresa-- who asked that his life be spared.

In a final statement, O'Dell said today was the happiest day of his life.
O'Dell was married earlier today-- to law student and longtime advocate Lori
Urs-- she crusaded for four years to prove his innocence.
O'Dell's lawyers claimed D-N-A evidence would clear him in a murder.
Helen Schartner of Virginia Beach was raped and tortured before her death,

A federal judge has thrown out Michael Knowles' defamation claim against
columnist Ann Landers.
Knowles was convicted last month of killing his wife... but not before he
wrote a letter to the nationally- published advice giver.
In the letter last February he clearly stated that he took Angie's Knowles
Then he sued for slander and defamation when Landers published the letter,
and said it was a "cop out" for knowles to blame Angie for leaving him for a
man she supposedly met on the Internet.
Judge James Turk points out Knowles never denied killing his wife.
A Christiansburg woman faces THREE counts of felony child abuse-- following
a fatal crash that killed her daughter in May.
Seven year-old Samantha Rentch was SUPER=03-Montgomery Co./May 24;
thrown from the back of a pickup truck when it crashed into another vehicle.
The mother, Treca (Teresa) Rentch was a passenger.
The driver of the pickup, Christopher Fisher is facing involuntary
manslaughter along with drunk driving charges.
This incident is renewing calls for a law requiring safety restraints for
minors riding in the back of pickup trucks.
Twice, Governor Allen has vetoed legislation on the issue.

Both men say they'll fight any government effort to cut the number of adult
In Martinsville, Don Beyer promised to PROTECT tobacco growers.
The Democrat said he supports government efforts to reduce underage smoking,
but adults should have the right to light up, even if it makes them sick.

Beyer and Gilmore don't agree on who should restrict underage smoking...
Beyer supports F-D-A regulation.
Gilmore opposes it: attempting instead to strengthen state laws against
children buying cigarettes.
The campaign season is here for Gilmore and Beyer for November's election...
but one newcomer to politics is moving past 1997.
Radford eye doctor Joe Barta is considering challenging
Democratic Congressman Rick Boucher in '98.
Barta has formed an advisory committee and says he'll spend the next few
months meeting with Republican leaders in the Ninth District, before deciding
whether he'll actually seek the G-O-P nomination.
Add another plant to the casualty list for Bassett Furniture.
This time, a crib factory in Statesville, North Carolina that's closing.
Bassett says it will transfer the work to one of its Henry County plants.
The company says the move may mean new jobs, but also more hours for its
Bassett has about 21- hundred employees in the Henry County area.
Back in May it announced the closing of its W-M Bassett plant in
Nearly all the 400 employees affected in that move have transferred to other
Bassett facilities, mostly in Henry County.
There is an art to a successful drug raid.

What looks like a scene from the TV show "Cops" is actually a very real
exercise in advanced tactical training.
The instructors are from the Army's military police school at Fort McLellan
They travel all over the country, training officers in big cities and small,
because criminals know no boundaries.

old Altavista Elementary School.

worst may not be over yet, with the remnants of Hurricane Danny moving in.

isn't done with the drenching yet.
Up to ten inches of rain has fallen since Tuesday night...and the
remnants of Hurricane Danny now pounding Georgia, are still pouring their way
north...due to double the amount of water by later tonight.
The rescues began early wednesday morning...people trapped in their
cars...caught by surprise as the torrential rains rose fast and
Parking lots turned into raging rivers...and those who tried to
beat the rise...spent the wee hours of the morning bailing themselves out...
When daylight broke..the damage came into watery focus...a csx
freight train dangling in mid air....it's trestle washed away...
it couldn't last for long...and it didn'T.
Not far away, the worst fear of rescuers came to be. the first fatality of
Charlotte's wettest storm in years.
evacuations were ordered for several apartment complexes....residents getting
a wet wake up call with no time to do anything about it.
I LOST EVERYTHING...I LIVE DOWN THERE.
And so does Shawn Little.

In many areas the water began to recede almost as fast as it came up

You see, Angel here, really hates cigarettes.
About 16-hundred cases of food poisoning from cyclospora have been reported
this year-- that's more than all of 1996.
The Food and Drug Administration held a summit meeting in Washington
today-- on what to do about it.
Cyclospora is a water-borne parasite that causes severe diarrhea, fatigue,
and loss of appetite.
Last year only raspberries from Guatamala were implicated in cyclospora
This year, raspberries made people sick in 12 states.
But in Florida it was mescaline lettuce.
And in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia, pesto sauce made
with contaminated basil.
Dr. John (REE-AHN) Rullan is heading up the Virginia investigation.
The problem-- he says, is where the food is grown.

Protecting against cyclospora is difficult-- even washing with chlorinated
water doesn't always remove the parasite.
One solution being floated is to bombard food with radiation to kill the
cyclospora-- but there hasn't been much appettite for that.

But First, The Chicago Bulls took a big step today toward keeping their
championship team together.
The Bulls signed head coach Phil Jackson to a one year contract extension
for the 1997-98 N-B-A season.
A Bulls spokesman confirmed the agreement but would not release the
financial terms. But the spokesman did say Jackson's salary will be the
highest ever paid to an N-B-A coach who was not also a general manager.

Five Chicago Cubs pitchers combined to hold the Atlanta Braves to five hits
and the Cubs beat Atlanta 3 to 1.
Cubs Manager Jim Riggleman watches the action from the dugout.
In the bottom of the fourth Sammy Sosa hits this double to centerfield
scoring Brian McRae and the Cubs took the one to nothing lead.
Chicago led 2 to nothing until the top of the 8-th that's when Atlanta's
Danny Bautista hit this solo homer over the left field fence to make the score
2 to 1.
