other people injured in a bus accident in Sussex County this morning.

The accident happened at about 7-15 just south of Petersburg.
The charter bus was on a tour tracing the path of the Underground Railroad
from Charleston, South Carolina, to Washington, D-C.
The bus plunged off Interstate 95 into the Nottoway River.
25-year old Addisa Foulkes of Detroit was killed.
34 children between the ages of 11 and 17 were hurt- some with life

Parks made civil rights history in 1955 when she refused to give up her
seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama.
She says Foulkes was like a grandson to her, but she hopes the group can
continue its trip.

The deal is expected to make it to the President's desk by Friday.
The Virginia Court of Appeals has overturned a ruling that Sharon Bottoms'
female partner should be barred from visiting Bottoms' son.
Today, the court ruled that a Henrico County judge erred when he cut off
contact between Bottoms' son, Tyler, and April Wade solely based on the fact
that Wade is a lesbian.
Bottoms' mother-- Kay, won custody of the child, and asked the court not to
allow Wade any visitation.
The appeals court said NOT just sexual orientation -- should be considered
when deciding what's best for the child.
The case will return to Henrico County for more hearings.

Police are reportedly checking out a woman's claim that Fernando Carreira
took food to the houseboat two days before alerting police.
That's according to this morning's Miami Herald newspspar.
The suspected killer was found dead at the houseboat- after Carreira called
Carreira's lawyer calls the report "hogwash."
A police source tells the newspaper investigators aren't sure how seriously
to take the claim, because the woman is on heavy medication for high blood
Italian officials say the body of executed killer Joseph O'Dell will be
buried in the city of Palermo Thursday.
O'Dell was executed last week for raping and murdering a Virginia Beach
woman in 1985.
His case prompted a media campaign in Italy against the death penalty and
drew the attention of the Pope, Mother Theresa and Italian lawmakers.
The body will be buried in Palermo's oldest cemetery-- the resting place
of victims of the Sicilian Mafia and assassinated mobsters.
A twisting stretch of highway in Bedford County might be safer in the future.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board is giving the O-K for a four million
dollar project on Hardy Road.
The Virginia Department of Transportation will straighten and widen route
Construction is expected to get underway by early 1999.

A less expensive, generic form of the drug is now available.
(WARF-UH-RIN) Warfarin is made by Barr Laboratories, which is building a
production plant in Bedford County.
Coumadin's maker-- DuPont Merck-- had fought to keep Warfarin off the
market, including here in Virginia.
It's still up to the state Board of Pharmacy to decide whether to require
pharmacists to contact a patient's doctor before selling the generic drug.

The General Accounting Office says Medicare shouldn't have paid for 40
percent of recent home health visits in four states studied -- California,
Illinois, New York and Texas.
New hope for the 40 million Americans who snore-- and their roommates.
The Food and Drug Administration has approved a device that shrinks the
tissues that block air passages.
A California company came up with the method to treat snoring and a more
serious ailment, sleep apnea.
With that condition, sleepers stop breathing-- it keeps them awake and can
sometimes even suffocate them.
Unlike laser surgery, the Somnoplasty technology works at relatively low
temperatures and leaves outer tissue- such as taste buds- intact.
