A bus taking children on a black history tour ran off Interstate 95 and
plunged into the Nottoway River.

One adult chaperone was killed and 34 others, mostly young children, were
injured.
The accident happened shortly after seven this morning in the Stony Point
area of Sussex County, about 20 miles south of Petersburg.
The bus apparently went down a 150-foot embankment into the river.
Civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks says the victim, 25-year-old Adissa Foulke,
was a close friend who she considered a member of her own family.
Foulke was the son of the director of the Rosa and Raymond Parks Foundation,
which helped sponsor the bus tour.
Hospitals in Emporia, Petersburg and Richmond treated passengers, most of
them suffered minor injuries.

A Roanoke County man has renewed his complaint against a local priest- -the
former pastor at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church.

Father Kenneth Stofft left the church more than a year ago, tearfully
admitting to the congregation that he has an alcohol problem.
Last month a parishioner filed a civil suit arising from an incident at the
church two years ago.
Robert A. Stone, the Third says he went to Our Lady of Nazareth for
counseling, but that Father Stofft was drunk, continued drinking and that he
propositioned Stone during the counseling session.

County police brought charges against the priest, but a judge dismissed the
CRIMINAL case in 1995.
Father Rolo Castillo at Our Lady of Nazareth says- -as far as he knows-
-the civil suit has not been served on the church or the Catholic Diocese in
Richmond.
Stone is asking for more than one million dollars.
His Richmond lawyer says he's meeting with church officials to try to work
out a settlement.

A Henrico county judge was wrong when he cut off contact between Sharon
Bottoms' young son and Bottoms' partner April Wade.
That's the ruling today from the Virginia Court of Appeals.

The Court says the county judge made his decision based solely on the fact
that Bottoms and Wade are lesbians.
Bottoms' mother, Kay, had won custody of the child, Tyler, and asked the
court to bar any visitation by Wade.
The appeals court today said ALL relevant circumstances- -not just Wade's
sexual orientation- -should be considered in deciding what's best for the
child.
The court has sent the case back to Henrico County for further hearings.

A busy highway in front of some Bedford County homes is about to undergo a
facelift.

Along the two mile twisting, narrow stretch of Hardy Road are 30- mile- an
hour speed limit signs.
They are posted near another reminder to motorists about driving carefully:
flowers at the site of a recent fatality.
Neighbors say an accident occurs between Beagle Club and Gravel Hill Road at
least once a week.
Virginia Department of Transportation officials plan to widen the area into
12-foot travel lanes and eight-foot shoulders with three feet of shoulder
paved.
V-DOT officials say the project has the full support of the community.

A Campbell County deputy arrested earlier this month on a peeping Tom charge
has been fired.
26- year- old Timothy Eric Bradley is accused of peering through a
neighbor's window at the Lighthouse apartment complex July 10th.
Bradley was arrested and suspended WITH pay during the internal
investigation.
Sheriff Robert Maxey says he fired Bradley following an administrative
hearing yesterday.
Bradley was a jailer for the last four years.
The peeping charge carries a maximum twelve months in jail and a 25- hundred
dollar fine.

That's the conclusion pollsters have drawn from the latest statewide survey
conducted last week for News 7 by Mason-Dixon Political Research.

Don Beyer picked up one point from the ranks of the UN-decided, but Jim
Gilmore still has a one-point lead over Beyer with 43-percent of those polled
last Thursday, Friday and Saturday saying they'd vote for Gilmore- -if the
election were held today- -42-percent for Beyer.
With a margin of error of 3-and-a-half points, it's obviously close.

recovery.
