a tractor trailer- killing ten students.
It happened in Plymouth about 100 miles east of Raleigh.
The van apparently tried to pass another car in a no passing zone- went out
of control and was skidding- when it was hit by a truck coming the other way.
The students were on a lunch break from summer band camp.
The driver of the tractor trailer escaped without serious injury.

Union officials say the six year deal also includes pension increases, a
better insurance package, cost of living increases, and one quarter of the
company's laid-off workers will be come back to work as soon as the deal is
ratified.
But all the improvements came at a cost.

A bookkeeper who embezzled 42-thousand dollars from the Harrison Museum is
in trouble again.
Norma Marie Underwood is named in a federal indictment that links her to an
international drug- trafficking operation.

surveillance team that was watching the car wash.

Take a look at the new Winston Cup Ford Taurus! The Taurus replaces the
Thunderbird, which has carried Ford drivers to 176 victories over the last 20
years.
Ideas for the new Taurus came from several Ford racing teams and Penske
Racing South.
Official track testing in the new Ford will begin in the next few weeks. Ford
expects 19 Winston Cup teams to use the Taurus in the 1998 Daytona 500.

When Horses Swim
This morning about 30 thousand spectators watched 125 wild horses swim
across to Chincoteague.
This was the 72nd year the ponies have made the swim.
Once the animals recuperate from their trip they will auctioned off to raise
money for the local fire department.
Parading horses through streets
The swim keeps the numbers of ponies on the Island down to 150. That's all
the area can support.
