It's one of the worst accidents in North Carolina.
A sport utility vehicle filled with high school band members crashed with a
a tractor trailer- killing ten students.
It happened in Plymouth about 100 miles east of Raleigh.
The van apparently tried to pass another car in a no passing zone- went out
of control and was skidding- when it was hit by a truck coming the other way.
The students were on a lunch break from summer band camp.
The driver of the tractor trailer escaped without serious injury.

Negotiatiors completed the deal shortly after midnight last night.

Union officials say the six year deal also includes pension increases, a
better insurance package, cost of living increases, and one quarter of the
company's laid-off workers will be come back to work as soon as the deal is

A bookkeeper who embezzled 42-thousand dollars from the Harrison Museum is
in trouble again.
Norma Marie Underwood is named in a federal indictment that links her to an
international drug- trafficking operation.
Four years ago Underwood admitted she stole the money from the museum.
She served a six-month jail term.
Shortly after she got out, she started working at Mac Brother's Car Care-
-a thriving legitimate business that allegedly served as a front for cocaine
On one occasion- according to a D-E-A affidavit- Underwood spotted a police
surveillance team that was watching the car wash.
The government says Underwood traveled between Jamaica, the Bahamas and the
U-S mainland at least six times helping to smuggle cocaine that was often
hidden in a pair of shoes.
She has pled NOT guilty.
Columbia/HCA Healthcare is the largest for-profit health care chain in the

A new trash collection system is expected to save the city a half-a million
dollars a year.
Starting September eigth new semi-automated and AUTOMATED trash trucks will
begin servicing 19-thousand residents.
The new system will be phased in by April.
And beginning next week residents will start receiving free trash carts.

The move to Blacksburg is actually part of an overall restructuring within
the company-- that includes closing two plants in Smythe and Tazewell Counties.
Tazewell County's Economic Development Director says nearly 250- will soon
be looking for work when its Richlands plant closes.

The American Red Cross is appealing for more blood donors. When we return
we'll see what it's doing to alleviate a critical shortage,
and it's an annual ritual, coming up a little later we see the wild ponies swim

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is facing a crisis.
The blood shortage is forcing it to cut the supply to the regions 44
Right now the Roanoke location only has about half of the blood supply it
usually have on hand.
Blood mobiles are traveling throughout the community and officials say hours
of the center are extended.
The Donor building on Church Street will be opened tomorrow from noon until 8
Volunteers say donating sometimes means more than just giving blood.

Two Vietnamese brothers who've been living in America for five years were
recipients of four year scholarships.

When Horses Swim
This morning about 30 thousand spectators watched 125 wild horses swim
across to Chincoteague.
This was the 72nd year the ponies have made the swim.
Once the animals recuperate from their trip they will auctioned off to raise
money for the local fire department.
Parading horses through streets
The swim keeps the numbers of ponies on the Island down to 150. That's all
the area can support.
