in case of a strike.
Elizabeth Arden had a bad experience back in 1994 the last time UPS workers
went on strike.
It was a busy season and transport managers say a lot of their shipments were
The company has already diverted some of its merchandise to alternative
carriers to avoid getting trapped in the UPS system.
But other catalog companies that use UPS such as Quality Fulfillment
Services here in Roanoke say they're sticking with UPS, for now.

Nationally the lead negotiators for U-P-S and the Teamsters union have been
meeting with a federal mediator.
U-P-S said earlier that it had put its ''last, best'' offer on
The union called that a ''bargaining tactic.''
Two people are seriously injured tonight in Montgomery County after their
motorcycle was struck by a car.
It happened on North-fork Road near Ironto around 9-15.
State police say the driver of a Ford Mustang apparently crossed the center
line striking the motorcycle.
Authorities are still trying to determine who was driving the car.
The couple on the motorcycle was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial.
No word yet on the extent of their injuries.
Three men arrested in New York may have been a planning suicide bombing- on
New York's subways.
That word from a federal law enforcement official in Washington.
Police raided the apartment- confiscating five devices- each strong enough

managed to pull themselves to safety. Dazed, thy watched as the MD-11 burned
out of control.

They were out on the runway by the time the emergency personell from the
airport got there which was in seconds of it coming down.
Officials at this, the busiest of three New York area airports, say there was
no indication anything was wrong aboard the jet as it approached Newark from
Anchorage Alaska. On hitting the runway, the MD-ll flipped over, a wing broke
off, and immediately fire broke out.

This is not the first time this plane has had a hard landing. In November of
1994, federal records show the same plane with a different crew had a hard
landing in Anchorage. The NTSB report says the plane suffered what it termed

About six hours after the crash landing, Newark partially reopened and
planes were able to take off even as fire crews doused the smoldering

Virginia has another connection to Paula Jones' sexual harassment lawsuit
against the President.
Former attorney general candidate Gil Davis is one of her lawyers.
Now, Davis and his team have subpoenaed Richmond area resident Kathleen
Willey to give a deposition in the case.
Willey's the daughter-in-law of former Democratic state senator Ed Willey.
She worked as a social secretary in the Clinton White House in 1993.
Jones' attorneys allege that Willey was herself sexually harassed by
For her part tonight, Kathleen Willey's saying through her attorneys that
she's outraged by the attempt to involve her in the Paula Jones suit, and that
her privacy is being violated by the allegation.

Investigators have determined the murders of three young Spotsylvania County
girls are the work of the same person.
Investigators today confirmed that the cases have been linked... through
evidence collected from the three victims: 16-year old Sofia Silva, 15-year old
Kristin Lisk and her 12-year old sister Kati.
Police would not say what the common evidence is, but they do say the killer
is probably acting out a fantasy.

The consumer advocates say shop around for cheaper accounts, which you're
most likely to find at smaller community banks and credit unions.

The new balanced budget is making it easier for some farmers to keep their

federal government once a farm is handed-down from one generation to the next.

Farmers in the region waged a letter-writing campaign about a month ago to
pressure Congress to increase exemptions.
The goal was to raise exemptions to two million dollars, but the new budget
will eventually allow only one point three million dollars.
The revised exemptions will not go into effect until 1998 and they'll be

Ernie Irvan's speedometer produced the most smoke as he captured the pole.
