Union leaders walked out of talks with UPS tonight, opening the way for a
nationwide strike in one hour.
Union and company leaders met in Washington at six this evening.
Shortly after ten o'clock, Teamsters president Ron Carey walked out saying
further talks would be a waste of time.
Byron Pitts joins us from Washington with the latest on the situation.

What is not clear is what will happen if the negotiations continue
past the midnight deadline. Earlier today a union representative seemed to
suggest that if there was no deal-- negotiators would stay at the table....

Valley Metro Bus drivers have voted on the company's latest contract
proposal, but there's no word on the outcome.
Employees of the Roanoke Valley's public transportation system voted today
during an afternoon meeting.
But they are not releasing the results.
Company and union officials agreed to keep the points of the contract
A joint statement could occur as early as tomorrow.
The drivers have been working on an extended contract for nearly four weeks
while the two sides negotiated.
Valley Metro's regular bus schedule begins tomorrow morning at 5-45.
There are no announcements of schedule changes at this time.
Wythe County authorities are working to determine the identity of a man
found dead in the New River.
The body was discovered in Ivanhoe around two- thirty by some people rafting
down the river.
No identification was found on the man-- who's believed to be from 45- to 55-
Sheriff Wayne Pike says it appears to be an accidental drowning.

The man has bright red hair and was wearing a man's designer ring on his
right hand-- and what appears to be an "employee service" watch from a factory.
He was wearing swim trunks and a golf shirt.
Authorities believe the body was in the water for 24 to 48 hours.
Some quick police work helped Lynchburg authorities nab three suspected
armed robbers earlier this evening.
Around 7, the clerk at the Bighorn Market on Leesville Road called 9-1-1 to
report she'd been assaulted, then robbed at gunpoint.
Several witnesses were able to give police a description of the getaway car,
a brown- colored Dodge Shadow.
Lynchburg police investigator Danny Viar happened to be near the store when
the call went out and spotted the car leaving the scene.
It was later stopped on Kenyon Street in Lynchburg and the three men inside
were taken into custody.
All three are still being questioned by investigators. No other details
have been released.
Rescue workers used the jaws of life in an effort to save people caught in a
burning car along route 151 in Nelson County.
But, it was too late.
Flames engulfed the car burning at least two passengers caught in the
vehicle beyond recognition.
The accident happened at 11:15 this morning when the car veered off the road
near the Amherst/Nelson County line.
No word yet on the cause.
A dirt bike accident in Salem sends one man to the hospital with serious
Lifeguard 10 was called to the scene around six this evening.
Walter Thomas Beckner and his neighbor Garnett Christopher Meyers were
riding dirtbikes on Beckner's property today.
The men were rounding the house from opposite sides and collided head on.
Beckner is now at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
Meyers was not hurt.
Relief is on the way for the crew of Russian space station Mir.
Workers spent the day preparing a Soyuz space capsule and booster rocket
that will blast off Tuesday, taking a replacement crew for the space station.
The new crew is prepared to take over the repair mission on Mir and fix the
damage caused by a collision with a cargo ship in June.

William S. Burroughs, shown here in the movie "Drugstore Cowboy", died
yesterday in Lawrence, Kansas after a heart attack.
Burroughs became a hit with his 1959 novel "Naked Lunch."
His "stream of consciousness" style of writing was called genious by some.
Others said it was impossible to understand.
Burroughs' work influenced other beat generation writers, such as Allen
Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac.
William S. Burroughs was 83.
One person is dead after a hot air balloon crashed in Oregon.
Witnesses say the balloon was flying near the interstate about seven o'clock
this morning, when it crashed into a fir tree.
The impact spilled all 8 passengers out of the gondola.

The man who terrorized New York City in the late 70's says he's sorry.

44-year-old David Berkowitz, the serial killer known as "Son of Sam" wrote a
letter to the New York Daily news.
Berkowitz says he has deep regret and sorrow for what he calls "all the bad
things" he's done.
He says he deserves to die for all the things he's done, and prays daily for
Berkowitz killed six people and wounded seven others. He's serving six
consecutive terms of 25 years to life.
A fugitive weighing in at 700 pounds is in custody tonight.
Yesterday, police nabbed 31-year-old Kenny Ray Gray.

Gray was scheduled to face cocaine and gun charges in Roanoke federal court
on Wednesday, but never showed up.
Police issued a warrant for his arrest and the search ended Saturday
afternoon when Gray contacted the U.S. Marshall's office.
Officers arrested Gray at his double wide mobile home in Bassett.
He was then transported to the Roanoke City Jail.
Labor disputes are making headlines this week as well as the construction of
some new businesses in the region.

A new manufacturing facility is going up in Forest.
Barr Laboratories is building there-- the company plans to begin making
generic drugs in Forest this fall.
And there may be some hope for former Holdren's customers.
A state agency says Holdren's customers who bought a Mitsubishi product with
an extended-service contract may get a refund.
Checking the financial markets for the week, the Dow Jones Industrial
Average rose 80 points, while the Nasdaq Composite were up a fraction.

trial hosted by The New River Valley Kennel Club.
This was not the time for a bad hair day, because once you're in the show
ring the judge takes everything into consideration.
So these prime examples of man's best friends are washed, blow-dried,
clipped and snipped before facing the judge.
Beauty is not a factor during the obedience trials.
In this ring dogs are judged on their willingness to serve their masters.
The animal and handler are judged on the skills exhibited during specific
exercises such as heeling, fetching and overcoming obstacles.

And Philadelphia 76-er point guard Allen Iverson is trouble with the law
N-B-A rookie of the year Allen Iverson has been arrested on drug and
State Police stopped Iversons car for speeding on Interstate 64 about 20
miles east or Richmond.
Police said they smelled marijuana and told the occupants to get out. While
searching the car they found a gun underneath Iverson's seat.
He was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of firearms with
a controlled substance.
The driver was charged with speeding and Possession of Marijuana and
another passenger was charged with possession of Marijuana. All three were
released on bond.
A court date has been set for August 12-th. If convicted Iverson faces up
to a year in jail and a 25-hundred dollar fine.
The Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars went head to head in a N-F-L
exhibition season game yesterday afternoon.

this afternoon in Athens, Greece.
Maurice Greene of the U.S. beat defending champion Donovan Bailey with a
record time of nine-point-86 seconds.
And Former North Carolina basketball star Marion Jones won the Women's 100
meter dash with a time of ten-point-83 seconds.
The skyline in Auckland, New Zealand is over a thousand feet taller today.
The Auckland Sky Tower officially opened its doors to the one thousand
seventy-six foot structure with great fanfare today.
Laser beams and fireworks punctuated the event while three thousand
onlookers watched in awe.
The tower houses the city's only casino, a revolving restaurant and
several observation decks.
