((The parties gathered and got back down to business-- in the early evening.... called back to the negotiating table by a federal mediator... looking to avert a walk-out by 185-thousand members of the teamsters union.
JOHN CALHOUN WELLS/FEDERAL MEDIATOR OR DIR., FEDERAL MEDIATION AND CONCILIATION SERVICE: WE'RE MOTIVATED VERY STRONGLY TO TRY TO REACH A SETTLEMENT AND TO TRY TO PREVENT A STRIKE BECAUSE WE UNDERSTAND THAT THERE WILL BE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DIRECTLY IMPACTED BY THIS STRIKE.
U-P-S handles approximately 12-million letters and packages --every-- day. no other competitor-- even comes close to that volume of shipping... so, a strike, analysts believe-- will cause a near crisis... for businesses, and-- average Americans.
Among other things, the teamsters' are asking for more full-time positions and the elimination of subcontracting...
RON CAREY/TEAMSTERS UNION PRESIDENT: IF THE COMPANY DOES NOT ADDRESS THE CONCERNS OF OUR MEMBERS, ABOUT GOOD DECENT FULL-TIME JOBS, ABOUT BROWN SHIRTS DOING BROWN WORK-- THE WORK THAT BELONGS TO THEM-- NO SUBCONTRACTING, THE PENSIONS, THE HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUE... IF THE COMPANY DOES NOT ADDRESS THOSE ISSUES. I ASSURE YOU TONIGHT WE WILL BE ON STRIKE.
GINA ELLRICH/UPS SPOKESPERSON: WHAT IS AT ISSUE HERE IS A PENSION PROPOSAL THAT THE COMPANY HAS OFFERED-- WHICH RAISES PENSION BENEFITS ON A MONTHLY LEVEL BY 50-PERCENT ON AVERAGE. IT IS A PROPOSAL THAT BENEFITS OUR PEOPLE. IT IS A PROPOSAL THAT THE UNION OBVIOUSLY CAN NOT AGREE TO AND CAN'T LIVE WITH....
What is not clear is what will happen if the negotiations continue past the midnight deadline. Earlier today a union representative seemed to suggest that if there was no deal-- negotiators would stay at the table.... and employees would walk.
