Many people turned to the U.S. Post office, which limited customers to 4

An elderly Lynchburg man who may have surprised a burglar in his home
remains hospitalized with severe head injuries, as police look for his

The man found dead in the New River over the weekend was not carrying
But a nurse at the Wythe County Community Hospital recognized him as 46-
year old Dallas Barry Hill of Carroll County.
Some people rafting in Ivanhoe discovered Hill's body yesterday afternoon.
Wythe County Sheriff's officials believe Hill's death was an accidental

Construction of central Virginia's new regional jail can finally get
underway, now that Lynchburg has added a new downtown parking garage.
City officials helped open the 375- space parking deck on Clay Street this
Council had required the new deck be built before jail construction wiped
out another nearby parking lot.

Last week, we told you about a Richmond area woman who's been subpoenaed to
testify in Paula Jones' sexual harassment suit against President Clinton.
Now Newsweek magazine's filling in the details.
Newsweek's reporting that Kathleen Willey -- seen here last year in a flight
attendant training class -- had an encounter with the President while working
at the White House in 1993.
Newsweek's source is former White House co-worker Linda Tripp.
Tripp says Willey told her she was kissed and fondled by the President in a

"Her face was red and her lipstick was off. She was flustered, happy, and
joyful," Tripp told Newsweek.
Willey has spoken publicly through her Richmond attorney only to say she's
outraged and will fight the subpoena.
Jim Gilmore and Don Beyer are in a dead heat in the polls.
But according to the same pollsters -- Republican Gilmore's campaign
promises are more popular by a long shot.
So what's Don Beyer to do?
The Democrat's challenging his opponent to five more public debates between
now and election day.
The pair squared off last month at the Greenbrier resort, and have another
debate scheduled in October on Doug Wilder's radio show.
The Gilmore campaign says it's NOT opposed to more debates -- but called
Beyer's declaration "gimmickry."
A spokesman says both campaigns have received over 30 invitations to debate.
The Crenshaws store at Valley View Mall is going to close.
This time, the company says it's for good.
The appliance and electronics store starts a going-out-of-business sale
Crenshaws only recently re-opened, after reclaiming merchandise that had
been repossessed by a creditor.
The company says it plans to sell out to the bare walls, even if that means
taking a loss.
Crenshaws continues to blame its poor sales on "adverse publicity" over its
policy on Holdren's service contracts.

The Dallas Cowboys have had more than their share of off-the field problems

This morning he was arrested at the Dallas-Ft. Worth International airport
for carrying a loaded .38 calibre pistol in his carry-on bag.
Switzer says he hid the gun in the bag this past weekend when nine relatives,
including three young children stayed overnight at his house.

This afternoon the team announced that Dave Charpentier has been hired as
Mast's new crew chief.

has come to contract terms with the Boston Bruins.
Thornton who just turned 18 years old is expected to sign a three year deal
