The Blacksburg police department faces a ten-million dollar lawsuit in connection with the fatal shooting of a suspect who was wanted on a probation violation.

The lawsuit alleges that police shot Maurice Taylor in the back in August 1995 after he fell to the floor and then handcuffed him as he lay dying.
Taylor was standing in line at a drugstore when officers approached him and he pulled out a B-B gun.
A special prosecutor and U-S Attorney Robert Crouch concluded after the shooting that the officers were justified in using deadly force because Taylor pulled a gun on them.
SUPER=03-Roanoke/Yesterday;

But Bill Cruey, the attorney for Taylor's family, said those conclusions were based on possible criminal charges against the officers and didn't examine the issue of civil liability.
