Police say a man came up behind her and shot her repeatedly in the head, then shot her seven- year- old son Daniel in the ankle.

It was first come, first serve for reporters, so one media organization paid locals to camp out on the steps of the small courthouse and reserve a place in the line for courtroom passes.
100 parking spaces were allotted for the media, but the frenzy was more controlled than expected.

A former Vinton police officer is says he was fired this summer because he is African American.
The June 12th dismissal of Christopher Divers left the 17-person Vinton police force with one black officer.
Police Chief Riley Foutz declined to discuss the firing but said a citizen filed a complaint against Divers.
Divers has filed a wrongful termination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and has filed a grievance with the town.
