The Virginia Court of Appeals says a secret hearing in a Roanoke County murder case violated the first amendment.

In May, Judge Roy Willet closed the competency hearing for Earl Bramblett.
Bramblett is charged with killing four members of a Vinton family.
During the hearing, three psychologists testified about the defendant.
Judge Willet sealed the testimony, saying it was necessary to protect Bramblett's right to a fair trial.
The Appeals Court disagreed, saying the public had a right to be there, because competency hearings can sometimes delay a trial indefinitely.
The court documents will remain sealed until Judge Willet orders them opened.
Attorneys for the defense and prosecution had no comment on the ruling.

The crabs come into the coast in the summer to molt.
They shed their old shells and swell-up as they new one grows, so they're soft and vulnerable to prey. Instead of hiding for protection, they cluster and find safety in numbers.
