But instead of Virginia Military Institute in 1996, it's Southern Military
Institute in the year 2000 or beyond.
And Guthrie says since news leaked out over the weekend of his plans... a
flood of offers of support, including a fully built facility in Texas, make the
dream of a privately- funded "SMI" "very achievable."
Tom Moncure sat on VMI's governing board two decades after he says VMI made
him a man.
And he was the one who quit when it voted 9 to 8 last fall to admit women.
But he has a hard time explaining what's missing.

A Floyd County man will spend at least ONE year in prison for a traffic
accident that killed a local high school custodian.

Timothy Scott Chaffin was found guilty of aggravated involuntary
manslaughter.

The charge stems from a traffic accident on Peppers Ferry Road that took the
life of Steven Burton.
Authorities say Chaffin had a blood alcohol content more than twice the
legal limit when he crashed "head-on" into Burton.
Chaffin will have to spend at least one year in prison-- but could be
sentenced to a maximum of 20.
He will be sentenced in October.

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a class-action lawsuit against
the Virginia High School League on behalf of 10 female athletes in the
Tidewater area.
The problem, according to the ACLU, is that the VHSL schedules its girl's
basketball and volleyball seasons for Group A and Group Two-A schools in the
Fall but Group Three-a in the winter.
The suit contends all three girl's groups should play at the same time of the
year like the boy's do.

the league does not discriminate based on sex, and that the schools themselves
and not the league's officers decide when to play their seasons.
