The chemical fire is causing some schedule changes--

Atkins Elementary School will be closed tomorrow, and so will Woodgrain
Millworks. All other industries will be open, but employees will have to
travel I-81. Again, Atkins Elementary and Woodgrain Millworks are closed
Perhaps of greatest concern were the reports of small amounts of cyanide gas
possibly leaking into the air from the fire.
Authorities on the scene stress the amount never reached a dangerous level.
Doctors say the gas mainly attacks a person's respiratory system.
And, symptoms vary.

Doctors are also warning that the gas is not only colorless but odorless to
most people as well.
So, residents should NOT rely on their senses when determining their level
Treatment for exposure mainly includes hooking-up patients with an oxygen
Normally, doctors note that long-term medical problems do NOT result from
exposure to small amounts of the gas.
They knew it would happen- -sooner or later- -one of the women at Virginia
Military Institute has dropped out.

They're looking for the remains of Carol Smith... the wife of warden.

Rain that fell in the Blue Ridge mountains and flowed through the farms and
rivers of Southside and southwest Virginia -- it's pouring out into the
reservoirs that serve Virginia Beach.

spent 15 years and about a quarter BILLION dollars fighting to, finally
building, and operating this 76 mile pipeline.

But it's a cascade of frustration for Virginians to the west who've been
watching their water levels -- no matter what Virginia Beach says.

It's possible -- but unlikely -- that a federal appeals court in D.C. could
still dampen Virginia Beach's fun.
But until then -- this flow will increase from 4 million gallons a day to 60
million sometime in November.

Coming up tonight in sports, Courtney Alexander says he's finished with UVa,
Art Monk is in Radford tonight,
and Steve Mason was in Lexington this afternoon to check in with the VMI
Keydets who are ready for their football season under head coach Ted Cain.
Back in July, UVa head basketball coach Jeff Jones suspended guard Courtney
Alexander indefinitely after he was charged with assaulting his girlfriend.
She told police he choked her, hit her and kicked her in the ribs.
This afternoon Alexander told UVa he's not coming back to school
because it's just not in his or the University's best interest for him to

The sharp shooting guard will not say where he plans to go to finish out his
career, but WINA radio in Charlottesville reports that Alexander will enroll at
Wherever he transfers to, he will have to sit out all of next season, before

Radford University is ready to welcome it third group of sports hall of fame
inductees back to campus tonight.
