((For a time this evening...both of MIR's oxygen systems...the
primary system..and the backup system...failed.
Since a June collision with an unmanned supply ship...the crew
had been using so-called oxygen canisters...which burn like candles and supply
oxygen. But that system broke down tonight...so the crew resorted to
it's main system...which had been turned off.
But that system also failed, apparently from overheating.
U.S. space agency officials said tonight that even with both
systems off...quote..."this is a not a critical issue" for the
crew...since there are several days supply of ambient oxygen in
the space station.
In any event...if the oxygen situation were to become
serious...the crew could always evacuate the MIR in their escape
capsule.
To further confuse things...a new wire report from Moscow
tonight...quoting a Russian Mission Control spokesperson...said
that the crew had managed to reconnect the primary oxygen
system...and that ....quote.."there is no oxygen problem on MIR
today"...end quote.
Space officials said the MIR crew is now asleep and there will be
no further word on the status of the space station's oxygen
system until morning. Richard Threlkeld CBS News, Moscow.))
