There's some good news and some bad news in the latest S-A-T test results
for Virginia students.
Virginians had slightly higher verbal scores on the 19-97 Scholastic
Assessment Tests than the national average, but lagged the nation in math.
Virginia's test-takers scored 506 in verbal -- one point above the national
average.
In math, students scored 497 -- one point above last year's score but 14
points below the national average of 511.
Educators say the lag can be explained by Virginia's higher participation
rate in the S-A-Ts.
A total of 69 percent of Virginia seniors took the S-A-T, compared with 42
percent for the nation.

Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman is promising black farmers that the U-S
Department of Agriculture is working to undo years of unfair racial practices.
Black farmers have protested that the U-S-D-A has discriminated against them
when making loans.
The U-S-D-A this year has dealt with hundreds of civil rights complaints
from black farmers and even a march in April on the agency's Washington
headquarters.
