State police are investigating the shooting death of a shoplifting suspect
by a Danville Police Officer.

((During a closed-door hearing in May, Bramblett's attorneys tried to show
Bramblett suffers from delusions.
It started as a conspiracy by the Hodges, Bramblett believes. Ultimately
police, even his own lawyers joined in- -by Bramblett's logic.
Blaine and Teresa Hodges were killed in their own home exactly three years
ago today- -along with their two children, Winter and Anna Hodges.
The house was set ablaze after the four were killed.
In an audio tape- -recorded after the Hodges were killed, Bramblett told a
story about Winter putting on a show for him, "gyrations" he called it.
"What I had suspected for a year," Bramblett says he thought it "was a
setup. Blaine was trying to buy himself out of jail by using his daughter as a
some type of sexual enticement toward me," Bramblett said on tape.
Psychologist Evan Nelson concluded Hodges suffers from a rare delusional
disorder... believing that the Hodges were involved in a conspiracy against
him... that Police planted evidence and tried to frame him... that he figures
he'll eventually be tried on false evidence.... that his own attorneys are part
of the plot to keep him from having his day in court.))
All this came out today, because the Court of Appeals ordered County Judge
Roy Willett to open the file to reporters.
Bramblett's trial is set to begin October 14.
Danville police officer Dewey Hancock Junior is on administrative leave
after killing an alleged shoplifter yesterday.
Meanwhile state police investigators are still trying to figure out the
dead man's name.

((The man arrested for shoplifting at Belk Department Store yesterday
afternoon apparently shoved a police officer and ran from the mall.
Officer Dewey Hancock Jr. found the man in a parking lot and chased him
behind the furniture store.

The two men fought for Officer Hancock's gun and a shot was fired, leaving
the suspect dead with a single gunshot wound to the chest.

State police say they don't have a name for the victim...
who was arrested for credit card theft only last week.
He told officers he lived at 174 Gray Street in Danville...
the man who answers this door says he knew the victim only as "D" and D
stayed there off and on for several months.
He says D was his friend, and he's talked to a second suspect who was
arrested for shoplifting at the same time.

Police say the second suspect has made bail and gone free,
but it will be a while before they can trace the dead man's true name.
After all, he gave them fake names, fake addresses, and they say even his
fingerprints are leading them nowhere.

Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown says the beating Tuesday was part of a gang
The alleged victim, 20-year old Richard Collins says neither he nor his

When her case went to trial last month, Cory Kast, the suspect charged with
raping Trump, was freed from prosecution.
It turns out Giles County Commonwealth's Attorney Garland Spangler waited
too long to prosecute the case.

Judge Colin Gibb was unable to comment-- but circuit court personnel tell
"they are NOT aware of any situation in which any judge has lost documents or
failed to sign a document."
They also note that "as far as a speedy trial, they have observed the Judge
prompting Mr. Spangler on various occassions to tend to the continuance orders
and guard the dates on the cases."
Prosecutor Spangler may have known his case was in trouble BEFORE it went to

Sources who spoke with NEWS 7 question the way Spangler handled the case for
Renee Trump did NOT see her attacker because he put a shirt over her face--
however D-N-A evidence identified her attacker as Cory Kast-- which could have
easily made this an open and shut case.
But Spangler may NOT have been able to bring out the D-N-A match in court
that day because he failed to notify the defense beforehand.

This isn't the first time Spangler has failed to fill out the appropriate
paperwork regarding cases.
The Mathew Collins case is one example.
Collins was facing 20- years in prison for raping a young girl-- but only
received a one year sentence.
Sources tell NEWS 7 Collins had been convicted of raping the girl six years
before but Spangler was unable to bring out Collins' past in court because he
failed to notify the defense in a timely manner.
Garland Spangler refused to comment about the cases, but jurors we spoke
with say had they known about Collins' past they would have argued for a

A man accused of attacking women at two Roanoke County apartment complexes
has been CLEARED of all charges.
Judge Diane Strickland dropped the case today against Ronald Eugene Heavner.
He was arrested in May for aggravated sexual battery and forcible sodomy.
Heavner's lawyer, David Damico, says D-N-A evidence conclusively showed that
police arrested the wrong man.
A computer printout backed up Heavner's alibi. He was on the Internet when
the crimes were committed.
Construction along 460 in Bedford County is causing problems for at least
one store in Goode.
Road blocks and construction barrels have blocked an access road to Sandy's
Gifts and Crafts since Wednesday.
The owners estimate it's costing them about 1,000 dollars every day and has
cut back on the number of customers.
Sandy and her husband believe county officials are treating them differently
because of the size of the business.

Lion last year has been reduced to 315-thousand.
The case resulted from a 1992 hidden-camera expose accusing the
grocery chain of selling rat-gnawed cheese and rotting meat.
Also today the judge in North Carolina rejected the grocery chain's demand
that A-B-C pay its legal fees.
Food Lion had not sued for libel, instead claiming fraud, trespass and
breach of loyalty.
Two A-B-C producers took jobs with the chain to videotape evidence.
A cadet from Fork Union Military Academy testified today that he endured
years of abuse at the hands of a teacher.
The student said some of the activities involved spanking and nudity.
The 17-year student told a Fluvanna County judge that he ignored the sexual
undertone of their activities because the two were friends.
Forty-two year-old Gregory Allen Moyer, a science instructor at the
academy, is accused of taking indecent liberties with children.
Another cadet is expected to testify next month. He's considered an
unwilling witness, because Moyer is living with him and his parents in
