Students in Salem are mourning the death of one of their peers-- 14 year-old
Kevin V. Compton.
Compton, a member of the Salem High School Football team, was found dead in
his sleep yesterday morning at his home.
The cause of death has not been determined.

awaiting more test results.
Foul play is NOT suspected.
Compton's grandfather says the boy did practice football Thursday night--

V-M-I's Board of Visitors met today-- their first formal meeting since the
matriculation of the "new corps."
Saying the integration of women has run smooth so far-- Superintendent
Josiah Bunting praised the cadets before the board.

In the past two weeks, two females and 26 males have dropped out of the rat
line-- numbers right in line with the school's expected departure rate.
For several years, Central Fidelity bank has had a promotion offering free
checking through the year 2000.
Last month though, it announced it was being taken over, leaving some
account holders wondering if the free checking deal would remain in force.
Len Besthoff reports after some initial confusion, the bank says it WILL
honor the free checking offer.

Carolina, some customers have wondered if it can keep its free checking
The bank's public relations office told us it couldn't make any guarantees.
Yet as recently as this Wednesday, Central Fidelity was still pitching free

The only people who knew it wasn't guaranteed were the ones who asked.

Construction along 460 in Bedford County is causing problems for at least
one store in Goode.
Road blocks and construction barrels have blocked an access road to Sandy's
Gifts and Crafts since Wednesday.
Sandy and her husband estimate it's costing them about 1,000 dollars every
day and has cut back on the number of customers.
They believe county officials are treating them differently because of the
size of the business.
